Muhammed cartoonist Lars Vilks attacked by muslims in Sweden

longde says...

Wow. A dog.

My sympathy for this character just went to zero.

So a vulgar, talentless, slanderer of religion is what passes for an artistic crusader for free speech in Europe?

>> ^Sagemind:

The artist's name is Lars Vilks.
During a free speech lecture in Sweden about the limits of artistic freedom. 15 Muslims screaming “Allahu Akbar” rushed the podium, headbutted Vilks, broke his glasses and tackled him to the floor. The whole assault was caught on tape:
Vilks has been receiving death threats since he drew an image of the prophet Muhammad with a dog’s body.

Most contemporary Sunni Muslims believe that visual depictions of the prophets generally should be prohibited, and they are particularly averse to visual representations of Muhammad.
Lars Vilks said a group of about 15 people had been shouting and trying to interrupt the lecture before the incident at Uppsala University. Vilks told The Associated Press a man in the front row ran up to him and head-butted him during a lecture, breaking his glasses but leaving him uninjured. It wasn’t immediately clear what happened to the attacker.
Lars Vilks Muhammad drawings controversy:
Vilks has faced numerous threats over his controversial drawing of Muhammad with a dog’s body, but Tuesday’s incident was the first time he has been physically assaulted.
Earlier this year U.S. investigators said Vilks was the target of an alleged murder plot involving
Colleen LaRose, an American woman who dubbed herself “Jihad Jane,” and who now faces life in prison. She had pleaded not guilty.

Actually, I recall it too, which is why I mentioned it, sarcastically... moreover, I recall the '94 Vancouver Riot after the Canucks' almost-win, and the 2008 riot in Montreal after a win as well.

Actually I recall a moment in time when hockey fans did cause a riot and millions in damage in Edmonton several years ago. Sorry but regional membership won't prevent acts of human stupidity.

Besides this the Associated press should be scolded for coming down on these fine athletes for celebrating mildly with OMG cigars, champagne and beer. I know it's not very lady-like but hell they're hockey players!!!

>> ^Payback:
What the Hell. Totally agree. They weren't doing anything the other 4000 Canadians in the stands weren't doing. In fact, the fans didn't even go outside and have a riot that causes $5M+ damage. THAT'S the Canadian way to celebrate a hockey victory!

Canada, you just won the gold medal in your home country! What are you going to do next?
We're going to calmly exit the building and start preparing for the 2014 Olympics. After a night of 8 hours of sleep, of course.

Bill O'Reilly - Glenn Beck Reacts to Jon Stewart Interview

JiggaJonson says...

I really wanted to come up with some kind of comprehensive analysis of this.
If not that, I wanted to pluck out one aspect of it and refute it.

But the problem with listening to these two chit-chat is that I quickly became overwhelmed with their bullshit. I think my problem was trying to draft something mid video but I kept catching myself stopping and saying "HEY that's not true!"

So my new direction with my comment is this: The truth leaves you no outs. Lies on the other hand always leave you something to fall back on, you can always tell another lie. It's really interesting watching these to dance through a conversation together.

I can point out numerous contradictions in the 6 minutes I just watched (and I will if asked) but to be honest I really dont want to. The only reason I even bother to watch this crap anymore is because I feel like I have a social obligation to understand opposing views on politics. The only trouble is I really dont understand what the fuck these guys are talking about because the facts have gone through some kind of bullshit filter before they were put back on the air.

And then I see it, the whirlwind of facts and bullshit intermingle so frequently it's exhausting even trying to really understand what these idiots are blabering about even within the context of what i consider to be objective facts (i get my news from a variety of sources including NPR, cspan, the associated press, cnn, and google news to name a few) -- But now I'm thinking about the man who watches nothing but Fox news. And I remember Fox has the highest ratings of them all.

We're fucked.

Michael Moore: Greed Killed Newspapers

notarobot says...

There are certainly a lot of elements to the decline of newspapers in North America and the world, and yes the internet is one of them. I think the point that Moore is making here is that as well as being drawn to the internet--for reasons us internet users all have some idea of--many literate readers were also pushed there by actions of newspapers that he describes.

In the "olden days" when the paper (and journalism) was an integral part of conveying information, informing towns communities about all the critical subjects Moore lists and more. Such journalism was part of the fabric that stitched society together. Now, instead of being united by concerns of labour, poverty and crime, people are united by celebrity gossip, fluff and "smaller words" style articles. "Real news" is often limited to syndicated columns Associated Press, Reuters or other wire services, or a "small words" summery of articles found there. Many papers have turned to sensationalizing news attract readers instead of intelligent original content.

Moore brings up a good point (not in this clip) by contrasting North American newspapers with those of Europe. While it is true that European papers have declined (in the wake of the internet), it isn't to the same extent as NorthAm. However some newspapers have flourished in spite of this downward trend because that chose base their business model on innovation rather than sheer profit.

Right-wing Bets Against U.S. in Pirate Standoff

vairetube says...

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/piracy

MOMBASA, Kenya – Somali pirates captured four ships and took more than 60 crew members hostage in a brazen hijacking spree, while the American captain freed from their grip planned to reunite with his crew and fly home Wednesday to the United States.

Pirates have vowed revenge for the deaths of three colleagues at the hands of U.S. snipers rescuing Capt. Richard Phillips, as well as for two others slain by French forces in a separate rescue last week.

"Our latest hijackings were meant to show that no one can deter us from protecting our waters from the enemy because we believe in dying for our land," Omar Dahir Idle, a pirate based in the coastal town of Harardhere, told The Associated Press by telephone. "The recent American operation, French navy attack on our colleagues or any other operation mean nothing to us."

United States Gives Russia the "Reset" Button

14853 says...

The Associated Press would like Americans to believe that our representatives have no clue what they are doing. Judging from comments on the various message forums Americans are gullibly buying the simplistic explanation that our State department supposedly doesn’t know how to translate the word “reset” into Russian. Nonsense! The Russian word peregruzka appears at the top of the button, spelled in latin letters. If this was meant to be a literal translation, why would the letters be in Latin? The english translation for this word is “overload” and anyone that knows how to type a few letters into an online translation website can easily figrue that much out. An english word appears below the button and that word is “reset”. These words do very much make sense together: when something is overloaded (like a circuit), you reset it.

Evidence of White Phosphorus in Gaza

10768 says...

The international Red Cross said Tuesday that Israel has fired white phosphorus shells in its offensive in the Gaza Strip, but has no evidence to suggest it is being used improperly or illegally.

The comments came after a human rights organization accused the Jewish state of using the incendiary agent, which ignites when it strikes the skin and burns straight through or until it is cut off from oxygen. It can cause horrific injuries.

White phosphorus is not considered a chemical weapon.

"In some of the strikes in Gaza it's pretty clear that phosphorus was used," Herby told The Associated Press. "But it's not very unusual to use phosphorus to create smoke or illuminate a target. We have no evidence to suggest it's being used in any other way."

In response, the IDF said Tuesday that it "wishes to reiterate that it uses weapons in compliance with international law, while strictly observing that they be used in accordance with the type of combat and its characteristics."

Herby said that using phosphorus to illuminate a target or create smoke is legitimate under international law, and that there was no evidence the Jewish state was intentionally using phosphorus in a questionable way, such as burning down buildings or consciously putting civilians at risk.
