Religion - From my point of view. (Religion Talk Post)

Making Sex Work

spoco2 says...

Great vid. Some of the arguments are a little off, but otherwise great.

I do agree that these things should be legal indeed.

Of course, it's always interesting asking the same people how they'd feel about their daughter being a sex working or working in porn. Quite often they can spout a glib 'well, if she's happy, then I'd be all for it' response. But you really know that they would be horrified to know their daughter felt that it was the best way for her to make money.

Myself and my wife have this issue with porn. We watch it yes, and hate with a passion any porn that shows a woman being mistreated (gagged, forced, head held or any of the commonplace 'norms' that are creeping into 'mainstream' porn these days)... but even when you're watching porn where the woman is treated well, you can't help but feel that at the end of the day the woman really would rather not be doing porn at all.

We've watched a few documentaries who follow women in porn and they are sad, sad tales no matter the image they try to project on screen and off during their career.

Yes, the message in this video is correct, criminalizing these industries is ridiculous, legalizing and policing conditions in them is a great idea. Just being flippant about the effects of porn these days on people is a little naive I think.

Hardcore porn IS to freely available to those that are too young to process it properly.

Anyway, I'm sort of off topic... I just think crying that porn has no negative effects is wrong, and I really, really dislike the trend into extreme, denigrating porn that is everywhere now.

Streaming Sifts and the bullshit that ensues (1sttube Talk Post)

sme4r says...

I just didn't do my homework first and noticed the poll and talk posts about this after I posted. Admittedly it was in a blind rage, however I still feel that streams have no place on a site that prides itself on filtering out the crap from the masses of videos, as opposed to allowing an unending stream of different videos to flood the site. Forgive me for wanting to preserve the natural intended purpose of videosift*.

*statement made reflects the opinion of the poster and not of the creator of videosift, or any other users, who/m may have a completely different view on what the natural intended purpose of videosift is.

We already have one talk post about this and also a poll.
Do we really need another one or is this some lame attempt at popularity?
Personally, I posted the news streams because people are always interested in news here and I wanted to share.
I happen to watch those streams anyway, and when I saw the MST3K stream was allowed, I figured why not?
If you don't like the streams, don't watch them. Or downvote them. Pretty simple. Go vote "no" on the poll.
Here's a couple other things to consider. Not everyone lives in the US, so maybe some people outside of it might appreciate access to things they normally don't get to see. Same goes for people in the US being able to watch TV etc from other countries. And not for nothing, but a lot of people actually do have computers that output to their TV. I canceled cable TV about a year ago and I definitely appreciate the live streams on the net. Save over a hundred bucks a month and I don't miss a thing.
I was concerned about the streams here at first, then I realized I don't give a shit. Why shouldn't people enjoy them here if they want to? I don't care if they get voted on or not, though I don't see any reason why they shouldn't really. If we wind up with a stream channel it would be nice to sort them by popularity etc.
I just don't see what the big deal is with any of this.

UFC 94: Lyoto Machida vs Thiago Silva

mentality says...

Still, it's always interesting when 2 undefeated go head to head. I had only recently gotten into MMA when this fight took place, so I'd never even heard of Silva at the time. I only knew of Machida because my friends were fans.
I agree that he did not "win" the fight with Shogun. He might have had more points due to some technicality, but he was dominated for pretty much the entire 5 rounds. They meet again in May and I expect a much better showing by Machida then.
I really enjoy watching Machida fight and don't think he's overrated at all. If anything, I think he's under appreciated.

I don't think Machida is under appreciated since he is usually ranked in the top 10 pound-for-pound fighters in most MMA publications. ie: http://www.sherdog.com/news/rankings/Sherdogcoms-Pound-for-Pound-Top-10-21720 (Great site btw, just steer clear of the forums)

Also, Shogun was a brilliant fighter back in the day, but experienced a series of injuries and setbacks and spent a considerable period away from the sport. Shogun has only recently begun his comeback, and the improvements from his Mark Coleman fight to his Machida fight is just amazing. I think it's Shogun who will be back in May stronger than ever, but in any case it's going to be an awesome event.

Star Wars MMO 20 min presentation

andybesy says...

I'm always interested to hear about new MMOs and if it's done (very) well then a Starwars MMO should be the ultimate for a sci-fi and fantasy fan like me, but...

The movement looks pretty clunky, were they using a mouse or a console controller? It looks horribly like fixed direction movement.. i.e. up, or left, or up+left.

The combat looks just plain weak... i'm sorry but running up to enemy and depending on the fact they can't shoot straigt? I've played enough games like that thanks.

Storyline is good if properly integrated with the sandbox style gameplay which other MMOs pull off quite well, but cut scenes alone don't do it for me, and the dialogue is just plain painful.

If it's early days then I'll be happy to remain open minded. It's a good post because I'm interested (upvote), but I haven't seen anything in this demo which excites me (other than it being starwars).

MSNBC Host Attacks Peter Schiff on The Ed Show - 8/6/09

chilaxe says...

Regardless of my own feelings, if I was going to bet money on the outcome of the national healthcare debate, I'd bet that Obama does pass healthcare reform, and that it produces better results than our previous system.

It's always interesting when intellectuals go into politics, but it seems to me that Schiff is going against the winds of history on this.

I don't think Yahtzee is getting tired at all. But then again, perhaps it's that I'm always interested in the actual review aspect of the videos?

Plus, the second half of the video had me laughing pretty consistently through. If anything, I think he was going downhill there for a while, and has been picking it up the past month or so.
