Bill Maher Discusses Boston Bombing and Islam

VoodooV says...

wasn't there something at the Air Force Academy too where some cadets were singled out because they weren't christian or something to that effect?

anyway. Maher pissed me off in this segment because he did all the shit we accuse Fox news of doing. Talking over the interviewee and etc. Why have the guy on if you're doing all the talking?

We get it Bill, you don't like religion, many of us don't either. But shut the fuck up Bill and let your guest speak.

The christian extremists are hidden from the media - the US army have quite a few men prosthelytizing for the war against the enemys of christianity.

Didnt a few get in trouble last year for burning other religion's books?

Cmon....all religion has extremist assholes, the christians just seem to be so much better at hiding theirs from everyone in the west.

Kissinger: Ecevit can be very helpful. Art will see the Germans on the
way home and also see Haig to see about getting surplus parts out of
stocks. And [Ambassador David] Bruce was helpful.

Esenbel: The Europeans should find ways to meet quick needs; for
example, the Air Force needs spare parts. For other items that they
can't find in the stocks, maybe you could make a deal with the Dutch or
others to send it here.

Macomber: That is illegal.

Kissinger: Before the Freedom of Information Act, I used to say at
meetings, "The illegal we do immediately; the unconstitutional takes a
little longer." [laughter] But since the Freedom of Information Act,
I'm afraid to say things like that.

We'll make a major effort.

Esenbel: Your Ambassador told me the opposite. In Germany they said
they delayed it one week so it looks like it happens after your visit.

Kissinger: My understanding is that the aid is now in force. They
informed us.

Yavuzalp: The political decision is made, they say, but they're waiting
for "appropriate timing" for implementation of the political decision.

The new russian 5th generation stealth fighter Sukhoi T-50

Drachen_Jager says...

Yeah, but the Russian designs cost 10% of the American counterpart, and in the case of the F22, they actually work well enough to use on a battlefield (Air Force refused to use F22s in Iraq and Afghanistan because they were deemed unsafe for combat conditions).

If I were an American I certainly would not brag about the state of the US fighter jet program.

VoodooV said:

always get a kick out of how russian designs are so similar to US designs.

The proposed russian design for the space shuttle was ridiculously similar to our space shuttle.

Kids Sing Obama's Praises

chingalera says...

Yikes. Three years later and just how much more FUCKED is it?? One Pissed Off Democrat in Michigan Speaks Up

bareboards2 says...

I listened to my conservative brother grouse about the terrible unions for decades. He is a highly educated, highly skilled ex-military pilot with a masters degree in aerospace engineering.

And then he got his dream job, doing exactly what he wanted on a military contract, teaching Air Force pilots to fly a new plane in a simulator.

He was in hog heaven, making great money doing the thing he loved.

Then he found out that the wages he was getting paid were "low for the area." The "prevailing wage" was much higher.

He was thiiiis close to being the union shop steward.

When I mocked him (I had to, mean come on!!!) about joining a union, he said -- you don't understand. We have some government agency negotiating our contract and they did a crappy job.

Yeah, so, what you are saying is you want to band together and get a better wage? As a group? You want to have some power?

It still cracks me up. The side benefit is -- he can never ever grouse about unions again. Because when it was HIS paycheck, suddenly he got all socialist.

Because it isn't socialism -- it is the height of capitalism, really. Except the "capital" isn't money, it is information and time and skill of the worker.

I do not understand why labor is held as such low regard, while we all bow down to the God of Capital. It is such a one-sided way to look at a complicated, entwined economic system. And as I said above, it will be death of corporations. They need healthy prosperous workers as part of the engine of the economy.

Nothing is perfect in this world. But the vilification of labor is a bad bad thing.

VideoSift 5.0 bugs go here. (Sift Talk Post)

Fletch says...

Not a lengthy description, just a clearer description. Hovering over Cult shows "CultSift". Dark shows "Dark". Military (although pretty self-explanatory) shows "Army, Navy And The Air Force". No Marines? News shows "What's Fit to Sift". Huh? Philosophy, for some reason, pops up "Philosophical Society". Mystery is still a mystery. WTF goes in WTF? Debunked helpfully returns "The Debunked Channel". Some of the channels are obvious, but many of the pop-ups are confusing or just parrot the name of the channel.

If lengthier, yet still concise pop-ups are not an option, at least link to a page that does list each channel and briefly and clearly details the types of videos the channel welcomes. The current link that tentative channel assigners are encouraged to refer to "before selecting any channels" (the FAQ link) is a dead end and no help whatsoever.

I would appreciate not having to go to every channel and read the description there just to make proper channel assignments for a single damn video. It seems making VS easier to use and navigate for new members and potential new members isn't a primary concern these days, but I'm sure they would appreciate it as well. Sorry if that sounds snarky.

Just to save posting another comment... I still can't see who's got their ass planted in Sift Lounge without having to join (although they're usually of the same lot of 5-10 cliquies).

What is "updated/clear pop-ups" on channels? If you're suggesting we display the full channel description in the hover text, that's not very feasible.

Styrofoam: Meet Acetone!

shang says...

I've made homemade napalm similar to this except we took a whole lot of styrofoam and dissolved it into gasoline 5 gallon bucket.

kept dissolving it until it wouldn't dissolve anymore.

Then a buddy of mine that flies a homemade ultralight loaded it up, and flew over the field, he's retired air force and has degree in electronics engineering, and built the timer device and did all the fine tuning solder work on the detonator and man it was the best 4th of july homemade napalm burn ever!

hehe, we used the napalm goop and filled small bottles that would eject from the 5 gallon bucket and it looked like a mini napalm spread just like from some vietnam war movie.

needless to say homemade explosions and pyrotechnics are fun

want to fill an entire block with thick white smoke? but it also smells like cotton candy

coke can, cut top off, mix half sugar, half potassium nitrate (aka salt peter sold over the counter at any drug store) mix or shake it together, then just light with lighter.

will fill a block with thick white smoke

Air Force Missile Fails Compilation

messenger says...

Most of it probably. Some of it I think was incompetence. Firing with a jet just above you means their updraft will suck the missile towards them. That's physics, and nothing new. The pilots must have known at least that much.>> ^deathcow:

I'll still see this as it's a Bruce Willis movie and he seems to have an O.K. streak; he hasn't ever really made/been-in a dud, similar to Harrison Ford on that front. Plus Joseph Levitt to boot, should be alright.

Air Force One?

cough Hudson Hawk cough Armageddon cough

While both those films are fairly bad, they are FAR more watchable than the true dregs of movies that have been made by people such as Uwe Boll or M. Night Shyamalan--when M.N.S. made a good show, followed by a decent one, and then proceeded to believe that he made the best films man had ever bear witness to. Plus we both know that there was an audience (and a large one for Armageddon) for BOTH of those movies and also Air Force One, @Payback; sure, they weren't me and you (or @Payback), but there are a lot of people in this world that do not ask very much from their movies.

It's when a movie lets down EVEN THEM that it is a pure and utter failure, able to be ridiculed without equal until the end of time. These are the worst films made. Of course many of the movies that DO succeed, like Prometheus right now (June 2012--for reference), can be made fun of A LOT (like Armageddon, which has been the punchline to many jokes). Why? Because, they have MASSIVE disconnects from reality or other bad writing and screenplay mechanics that they are just ridiculous when thought about with any amount of real thought and prowess in a subject dealing with the movie and it's attempt to portray reality in another light that is utterly false. As I said they appeal to the "entertainment" type audience; someone that would go see Independence Day over and over again. Not to us were we watch someone take off a helmet in a potential zero atmosphere environment "to test it out"; that is UTTER NONSENSE, no one does this in reality! This is the stuff that makes us hate those movies (and create the myriad of jokes for it as well). But, not the entertainment crowd who can enjoy a movie for what it is and suspend their connection with reality for awhile.

Granted if I were to use my "full-on" reviewing analysis of what I would include as good movies--the count of "alright" movies would plummet (for Harrison Ford and Bruce Willis). I can think of atleast 3-4 shows that Bruce has been in that I would consider failures in this light, but I know that many people beyond me DO like these movies--that is why I don't count them as failures as there remains an audience--a decently sized one--for those movies. I have to admit I have my own "cult" movie favorites that no-one likes, really, except for me and maybe a few other people I know. I also have been able to like movies for their entertainment value although I know if I treat them with reality they fall completely apart, quickly. Sometimes it's best to let your imagination rule your heart.

Same thing here. I'm just not on the end of the spectrum that enjoys those movies, if you get my drift. So, trust me, I know Bruce has his bad movies (same with Harrison Ford)--but his bad movies, so far, are better than the real dregs and bottom scraped-up leftovers that are out there. That is what I was trying to say in a lot less context--I hope this clears it up. We most likely see things fairly close or the same; I'm just giving credit to the people that DO like Hudson Hawk, Armageddon, and Air Force One.
