High Quality Horizontally Spinning Rat

Khufu says...

how is this a meme? a 3d model turntable on grey is a very standard way to evaluate a model/texture at any studio. Super run-of-the-mill ordinary procedure here!

QUAKE: Forefather of the Online Deathmatch-LORE in a Minute

Payback says...

Purely by accident, I bought the infamous Asus "Wallhax" GForce 256.

With all the BS surrounding it, Asus never actually intended it as a cheat. The settings were designed for viewing 3D models with the glasses they made to go with the card. The settings were under "stereoscopic glasses" or something like that in settings. There was nothing intended to be wallhax or the like, just developer settings in the drivers.

It was like if Toyota built a Camry that used a special paint to reduce drag by 50% but later was proven to make you completely invisible to police speed radar.

Demoscene Documentary series, episode 7: The Music Episode

jmd says...

I liked them back then because they were great technical marvels and had great mod music. Now they show the same 3d effects we see all the time with bad looking 3d models and pre recorded music. Just not the same anymore. I do like the 4k and 64k demo compos though, that takes skill.

I like the concept of taking this into a 3D modeling program and then after they say "and made history" the top opens up with a fat slob sprawled out on that couch with cigarette butts, chips and grease stains all over it, coke stains on the floor. The music stops as they look on appalled and then the voice continues, "those who pursue perfection forge their own path" hahaha!

3D Object Manipulation from a Single Photo

bcglorf says...

If only wishing or ignorance made reality go away. I suppose to manipulate that old picture of your parents you can just go to the magically internet repository with their high quality 3d models stored in it? Or you pet cat with the funny tail, or the tree in front of your house? Or the custom carved vase?

When you actually go try and match high quality 3d models to real world objects you quickly discover just how many are unique and hard to find.

That was in depth enough for me to understand.
The model quality is completely open since you can use a near infinite resource know as the i.n.t.e.r.n.e.t. to get the model you need.

Should have saved their time and just made a rendering from a 3D model, since they go through all of the work to make it look like a render instead of a real object.

Elon Musk designs 3D rocket parts with his hands in the air

Ralgha says...

Where in this video is anyone actually designing anything? Anyone who has done 3D modeling or CAD will immediately recognize this as complete BS. Shame on Elon Musk.

Rendering would be pretty much instant, as they're simply mapping shot footage onto generated 3d models as texture, in a sense.

It's generating the models that can be pretty intensive, and if they're actually getting reliable results of the quality seen here with only a few cameras, their software is pretty good. The automated solutions I've seen for scene capture have been a bit off from the mark still, having trouble with reflective surfaces especially and generally being a bit unpredictable. This looks quite impressive.
Probably they take advantage of having a fixed location, so they can pre-calibrate the camera fixes in advance, improving the quality of the spatial interpretation and probably speeding things up as well.

The question is: how long did it take to render? Is it hours or even days on large render farm for each clip? That might limit the practicality, certainly for sports broadcasts at least.

On the other hand, I hope in 10 or 15 years, I can watch sports and put the camera wherever I want in real time or put on my VR headset and watch as though I were standing next to the pitcher or sitting on the wing of a race car. That probably will happen and that is an AWESOME prospect.

Playstation 4 (Ps4) vs. Xbox One - Console Wars The Musical

TheFreak says...

Quite a bit actually, since I'm a systems engineer. I also gamed competitively on PC's, before all that was national and international. I modded games, built 3D models for games, built all my computers custom with the newest video cards, payed through the nose for the fastest broadband...

and then life happened

I don't argue that the quality of graphics on PC games is better and Steam is an excellent service. I just find that with family and other responsibilities I need to make the most of my time now. Sitting in front of my computer screen for hours not engaging with my family is hardly an option. But I can play tons of games with my family on console. For me, PC's are a solo activity with a huge ongoing investment in time and money. Consoles, I pay once and enjoy from the comfort of my couch, on a giant screen, while engaging with my family.

My real point is that PC's are a great option if your life allows it. Consoles fill a different niche. Just like XBox and PS are aimed at different interests. No one's going to win the argument.

Star Trek Into Darkness - International Trailer

braschlosan says...

Are any of you into high quality audio? If so research if there is an ATMOS theater near you because this movie is being created with ATMOS in mind. I am going to see it just for that fact, regardless of the plot or subject.

The first generation ATMOS hardware in theaters has 128 discrete audio tracks and up to 64 separate speaker feeds.
http://www.dolby.com/us/en/professional/technology/cinema/dolby-atmos.html#Video

"The system does not store your typical “channel” information. In the base system for panning, there is no dedicated “Left,” “Right,” “Center,” etc. Rather than store channel information, the system emulates something that has been used in game audio for years, spatialization within a 3D model. The reason for this, is that the system is scalable up to 128 channels. Yes, you read that right…128. The decoder has to be programmed for the playback environment it is installed in. Once it has that information, it creates the playback channel information in real-time during the film. In this manner, a film can be mixed in one room with a given set of playback channels, and be distributed to any number of theaters in any number of configurations"

"This unit will allow the room’s response to be measured, and a unique EQ profile can be established for each individual channel in the system. This processor will also be somewhat “self-aware” in that it can identify and report whenever there is a failure in the playback system" http://designingsound.org/2012/11/my-impressions-of-dolby-atmos/

Print a Fully Functional Gun from Your Own Computer!

shang says...

I've downloaded the 3d model files on thepiratebay.org or kat.ph

went over to my dad's workshop and printed up a sweet extended magazine for a russian sks I own. It's illegal I guess since it's unregistered, I bought it from a guy's garage sale about 20 years ago but it had a 5 ammo clip, I printed a magazine that holds 20 ammo. So I printed 2 and epoxied them together so I can put the mag in, shoot 20, flip the mag upside down and fire off another 20.

nice little system

Yeah, whatever happened to trying to emulate Ultima Online instead of WoW? Seriously! WAKE THE FUCK UP!

If someone came out with an updated game that allowed me to go into town kill some fuck for his ships deed and then take my new ship full of stolen weapons and sail it down the coast to fuel a war on some island it would make shit loads of money!

Or just make a house and sit in baking bread and making furniture....

Then I start hearing him talking about people getting paid by other players for their starship designs, and look at the pledge amounts and see they come with certain credits and start thinking 'Fucking hell, another fucking game that has in game purchases'.

You know, I heard that and I thought "finally, my childhood dream of making a living designing cool spaceships could be realised! "
I genuinely don't have a problem with that unless it becomes a "pay to win" scenario. In which case I'll stick to the single player campaign. Apparently, some people are making pretty good money designing stuff for TF2 and I think that's awesome.
aside from the minor problems of my complete and utter lack of artistic ability, design skills and 3d modelling know-how

TF2 is exactly the game to bring up on this topic. As long as Mr. Roberts sticks to this "no pay-to-win" rule. It's going to be fine. Let me shut my eyes and believe already
And I've been waiting for a dynamic MMO where players design/ have an impact on the environment in which they play.
