Zero Punctuation: Rage

This week, Zero Punctuation gives some fashion advice for the post-apocalypse.

RAGE is the first game I've played through to the end (single-player) since Red Dead Redemption, and frankly I thought RDR went on for too long. My one real beef with RAGE is not how soon the ending came, but how abrupt it was. I felt like I had no warning that the game was about to be really, sincerely OVER when I flipped that last switch. Also, once the storyline is over, you can't continue playing. If I want to see if I can 100% the game without replaying everything, I *might* be able to reload my last save and backtrack through the enemy citadel so I can do the remaining races I never got to... but then, I probably overlooked at least one of those collectible playing cards for the card game (which I have yet to try).

Still, my overall impression of RAGE was positive -- I really enjoyed it while I was playing, and I expect to play it some more. I got my money's worth.

If you want some real RAGE go to any PC gamer site and read any thread about Rage.

I've got to take exception to him calling quake 3 a pile of old wank. It performed it primary task exceptionally well, which was to be an excellent multiplayer DeathMatch or CTF game. I understand he's not big into the whole multiplayer thing, but if you bought Q3 expecting a rich single player experience you failed to have any understanding of the product before you purchased it. Its like buying a golf club to open cans of peas. Yeah you can do it but you're not going to be satisfied with the results. /nerdRAGE

Wah, wah, wah, iD didn't reinvent the wheel and give us a brand new gaming experience like we've never seen before... they seem to be emphasizing graphics over innovation! It's therefore a terrible game and iD clearly have lost the plot!

id made a shooter with an awesome engine, but lousy gameplay and story? Shocking.

The story is lousy to be sure. But the gameplay is absolutely fantastic. (if a little scatter brained). The gunplay in particular is extremely well done and very fun. I haven't had as much fun in a shooter since F.E.A.R. 1.. and before that Half Life. The gunplay is really tight, fast action, the guns are fun, and the enemies have great AI and the animation system is second to none.

Sure the story is a bit offhandish, and the game finishes oddly. But I got 20 hours out of it the single player game which is actually rather good compared to most shooters today where 4-6 hours is the standard.

Love the engine. It looks great and it runs great, even on my semi-aging video card.

Enjoy the FPS. The guns are satisfying, the enemies are different enough, and the AI is interesting enough to keep it fun and challenging.

The driving seems a bit off... It absolutely should be arcadey but a little more physics, particularly in the suspension, would have made the driving way more satisfying.

All that being said, I played for a few days and I think I'm done. I wish Skyrim was going to be on this engine. Maybe the next Fallout will be.

I thought it was great... mostly. Amazing graphics, and some of the fighting was awesome. I don't think it was too short, Steam says I played for 17 hours, but like Elron says, it seemed like it was building up to something awesome but then it just sort of ended, which gives the final impression of being short. Some of the earlier levels were pretty epic, and I figured they'd have something pretty cool for the end, but nope, it was probably the most mundane level of all. If they had just added one more hour of epicness in the authority city, it would have made all the difference in the world.

I'd actually say the game could be improved by a fairly simple mod: Remove the vehicles, and make it so you have to fight your way through hordes of mutants in the wasteland on foot to get to mission hubs, making it worthwhile by having them drop interesting loot. The vehicles were well done, but IMO, just unnecessary.

I understand there is a Doom remake in the works that uses this engine. That could be awesome. Screw story, characters, whatever, just give me some ridiculous weapons and set me loose on martian research facility overrun by zombies and demons, with just enough plot to keep it moving forward.

I bought Rage the other day, my kid is playing it through. I cant think of anything more boring to play than a game that says "I need you to go to place X, collect item Y, and bring it back to me." I do enough logistics in my day life thanks.

I've heard they cut an entire town out to put in later as DLC (Bethesda just loves to do this!). That would explain the whole weird ending.

I'd recommend the game. Runs great on even older hardware. If you have the newer hardware the graphics are simply stunning and the gunplay is top of the line for shooters. It's rather scripted but fuck if I care. At least it's not yet another 4 hour military shooter lol.

Maurusays...

I ran into so many freaking invisible walls playing rage it wasn't even funny anymore.
Oooh- we littered the landscape with all sorts of fantastic looking rabble but I'm sorry mate- you can't jump up that 20 cm ledge.
It also was no challenge at all (I never even had to use a defib charge on nightmare), let alone felt I actually had to use all those toys they provided. Just stand still and wait for the doods to stick their head out did the trick 90% of the time. No need to duck.

That's coming from someone who's prime gaming activity usually is firing up nethack every now and then.

It seems weird because everything not invovling the core game-design seems to have been done right.
