Windcatcher AirPad 2 - Easy-to-Inflate Air Mattress

This crazy air mattress allows one to blow it up in a very small number of breaths. We are living in the future.

You can find their Kickstarter here.

There are a lot of things I used to do as a kid that people have taken today, recognized it was actually useful, and turned it into something. I used to do this all the time with homemade pooltoys (don't asak).

Huh, that's neat. What is the mechanism used here?

He mentions at the beginning of the video, but it's just physics. The flow of air created by your mouth causes the surrounding air to follow the change in pressure.

I wonder why they went for a Kickstarter. This looks like something you should patent and then license to other companies. If it works as well as they claim, I'm sure they'd be falling all over themselves to give you money.

Kickstarters don't preclude a patent. They may well have a patent application already submitted. If they don't, they probably should.

Edit: The end of the video explicitly states they -have- filed for a patent.

Right, but there's also something allowing the air to rush in while keeping the air from coming out.

gets my vote. I remember getting home very drunk on beers and inflating a conventional mattress for my brother. when i deflated it the next day the room was filled with the delightful scent of stale beer breath.

I understand now. I was under the impression there wasn't one needed, but you're probably right in suspecting so.

So rather than a slow leak, someone can take all of the air out from under you in a matter of seconds? I'm DEFINITELY going to sabotage people laying on these in pools. Annnnd you're wet.

Looks like the rolling of the inflation tube pressurizes it beyond what the initial inflation can achieve.

There's that, too, and that's an elegant solution to the under-inflating problem. But if you look at the initial small bag he inflates (at ~0:46) he basically blows in it and then the end somehow seals itself and he holds it while it stays fully puffed up. There's some type of one-way valve he's created.
