I saw a similar attempt (I forget where the video is) at modeling the sound of water using computer simulation, he was speaking about how long it takes to do the simulation in a computer.

Hint: It's EXTREMELY complex because they are modeling soundwaves emitted very accurately and the reflections off of surfaces. Your average quad core would cry for mum over this kind of thing.

probably something similiar to software used to render physically accurate light reflections and refractions in graphics software, coupled with assigning the 'photons'(sound waves) a speed at which they propagate rather than instantaneous projection
probably relatively useless at the moment but interesting nonetheless
