Crosswordssays...As much as I'd like to decree that the US should have kept its trap shut about Kosovo declaring it's independence, if we had, we'd probably have Kosovoians (sp?) protesting and setting fire to our embassy instead of Serbians. I think I'll file this on under damned if you do damned if you don't.
On a more disturbing note, last I read a burned body was found at the US embassy, I've not heard anything on who it was.
kulpimssays...where were these people demonstrating when the army and serbian militia were killing innocent people in Bosnia and Croatia? serbs were always a minority in kosovo anyway, less than 10%, and most of them are gone now (since 1999), only some 100.000 remain in the northern enklaves. they'll just have to swallow it up and move the fuck on.
and as my friends from belgrade and novi sad tell me, the country is pretty much divided along those lines - the young urban population that just wants to move on and want serbia to eventualy join the EU on one side, and the nationalists, who want to "liberate" kosovo with AK's on the other...
calvadossays...The TV reporter bringing up the "Al Qaeda-related/not Al Qaeda-related" thing made me giggle ever so slightly. Do all US networks dredge that up at every possible random turn, or is it just FOX?
therealblankmansays...Again, I point out that there is no danger here. Nothing important has ever happened as a result of war in the Balkans.
Abductedsays...OMG unrest in the Balkan? After the forming of a controversial state? How is this possible??
They were waging wars there just a couple of years ago.
moodoniasays...This prompted me to read up on Kosovo. No shortage of blood spilled over it/on it over the last 1000 years. Every side putting the boot into each other whenever they got the power.
To paraphrase something Peter Ustinov said after the fall of communism and the breakup of the ussr, about tiny regions that have never been independent entities, people think that having their own flag and anthem are going to solve all their problems. Thats often only the beginning of the problems. He said that shortly before Yugoslavia really kicked off.
Hope this isnt going to be a repeat of history, but history would indicate that it is.
Farhad2000says...Heh. Independent Kosovo is a sham. Its not independent in any sense of the word other then it being a small enclave funded by international donors and run by NATO and the EU.
