TOP GEAR BMW 330i driving itself

rychansays...

I'll almost always upvote top gear.

As a computer vision researcher (which apparently that car did not use), this isn't SO impressive. Still nice, but not as impressive as the urban grand challenge.

But I fully appreciate how utterly uncanny it would be to sit in a car in that situation.

I'm thinking all it did was memorize exactly what the previous driver did. As long as it started out in the exact same spot there wasn't much to worry about. Or did I miss something? Did it make it around the track in some other way?

Ivegotthebends: I think you'll find it's not a case of mimicking only on the car's part, as you're never ensured that you're going to have exactly the same result from the same actions, and you really would have to start in EXACTLY the same spot. Being that it uses sat nav, I'm thinking that it is taught the course and then it tries to follow the pre-learned route, but using its own decisions on acceleration/breaking etc.

As rychan said, nowhere near as impressive as an a car that drives based on reading its surroundings, but still pretty cool.
