Rush Limbaugh's first & last appearance with a live audience

Limbaugh's first television appearance came with a 1990 guest host stint on Pat Sajak's late-night program on CBS. After a confrontation with ACT UP gay activists in the studio audience, protesting what they perceived as anti-gay hate speech, repeatedly shouting at Limbaugh, cutting off other members of the studio audience, and generally attempting to disrupt the program the entire audience was removed so that Limbaugh could finish the show. In 1993, Limbaugh appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman, and the audience almost immediately became hostile and booed him, especially when Limbaugh compared Hillary Clinton's face to "a Pontiac hood ornament."

Technically not his last, but this little incident is why you never see Rush Limbaugh (and, for that matter, Bill O'Reilly) in front of audiences they can't control.

"I would have rather heard one of those guys come down there and sit next to him and argue intelligently."

Yeah, ditto here. But this is what happens when you try to debate with someone with an extreme ideology. All they do is scream and call you names, they take advantage of their free speech rights to try to silence those with differing opinions. Those few audience members did nothing to try to advance their intellectual ideas, all they did was make themselves look like complete fools and embarrass those who share their position.

A perfect description of the careers of Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly. Thanks, Wumpus.

As opposed to whom?

I can't recall Rush or Bill ever abushing someone and calling them murders and calling for others to be taken off the air. Despite what you've been led to believe.

O'Reilly and Limbaugh are both bullies and sophists. All they want is to keep their ratings up and to be "right." As long as they "win" the argument, whether by rhetorical sleight of argument or insult or indirection, they don't care about the truth. They have done an awful lot to ruin the spirit of debate and inquiry in this country.
