Obama: It's Important To Hang On To Religious Tolerance

Lemme try....

"It's important to drink clean water."

"It's important to breathe clean air."

"It's important to brush your teeth."

"It's important to know when to hold 'em, and know when to fold 'em."

Gee, I could be president, too.

Luckily you live in a place that makes all of things common enough that you don't have to remind people about them. But imagine having had to say what he did. The fact that he HAD to say it out loud makes me think that enough people were thinking/doing otherwise. Amirite?

Bah humbug. I don't like the imagery of burning books, but if no one is hurt in the process, go right ahead. Burn books, flags and whatever symbols you like.

but... hate breeds hate.

there was once a wise man from Dagobah who said, “Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.

this whole debate about the Park51 community center and the Quran burning has led to anger and hate. Ask the NYC taxi driver who got his throat slit...

gwiz665says...

Who are we to trample on people's right to hate stuff? The Jedi are well-meaning and all, but they act like overbearing parents, imposing their peaceful ways on us by the end of a light saber.

Peace is a lie. There is only passion.
Through passion, I gain strength.
Through strength, I gain power.
Through power, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken.
The Force shall free me.

Yeah, I see your point... But why perform an act that one knows will result in hatred? It's like the over-zealousness of patriotism sometimes...

I dunno... I see both sides of the Quran burning arguement... There's nothing wrong with it, as a single controlled act of book burning, but it leads to feelings and actions beyond the initial event. Why open those gates to begin with when it will surely lead to something worse? While the burning itself does not cause any visible harm, it may lead to other events that are harmful. I guess then we end up back to the violent video games argument though, where personal responsibility comes into play.

I guess the better quote for this type of thing would be, "My right to swing my fist ends where the other man's nose begins." mostly as a reminder to viewers of the burning.

I think we should have a big iconoclastic symbol-burning party. I am wholeheartedly in favor of their right to burn the Koran. The fundies can burn physics and biology books, anarchists can burn the flag, Scientologists can burn psychology books, Anonymous can burn Dianetics, Atheists can burn the Bible, these guys can burn the Koran. Let's do it.

We can make it a competition! Whoever gets the most pissed off loses. You do not have a right to not be offended, and in fact I think it's the obligation of every free-thinking person to try to offend as many stupid beliefs as possible. Stir the fucking pot. Make people either 1) realize they're being jackasses by getting pissed off over nothing or 2) lose credibility with everyone else.

I'll see your book burning and raise you a Godwin!

There's a difference between defending one's legal right to do that kind of stuff, and actually condoning what's done.

Legally, yes, let them burn books, flags, and whatever symbols they like, but I'm still going to say hatefully and ignorantly burning Qur'ans is a bad thing that people shouldn't choose to do.

Good, then we're agreed.

It's muslim savages that have a hard time with religious "tolerance". One cannot question their sincere belief in the words of Allah, but unfortunately for the rest of us the "holy" quran is quite clear on the fate of infidels: convert, enslave or kill them...oh, and convert all world governments to sharia law.

Liberal "tolerance" doesn't work on faithful muslims, any more than it would work on a tribe of cannibals at lunchtime.

quantumushroomsays...

Ordinary tolerance and liberal "tolerance" are very different.

Liberal "tolerance" is a political weapon to segregate and isolate those 'dummies who want their freedom' from the vision of self-annointed liberal elites.

Liberal "tolerance", like liberal "charity", is executed at gunpoint. Society is lectured by the liberal about how we have to "tolerate" (and subsidize) illegal aliens, revolving-door criminals, excessive taxation, out-of-wedlock births, homosexuality promoted in government schools, etc. because there is no truth, everything is relative.

One thing I respect about those jihadists: warped as they are, they're upfront about who and what they stand for, far more so than Progressives.

The very idea that you think tolerance is some sort of tool to modify the behavior of the tolerated is humorous.
I honestly don't think you have any sense of what morality is about.

More contradictions. Because liberals say that we should not:

  • Deport people who fail to get government approval for entering our country, at gunpoint
  • Imprison people indefinitely without trial, at gunpoint
  • Tell people when they're allowed to have children
  • Tell people who they're allowed to fall in love with
  • Tell people which God they're allowed to pray to

We're the ones who are imposing our views on people...at gunpoint?

As for taxes, you really have some choices to make about the Constitution. Either it's an enforceable contract you're a signatory to (which includes an obligation to pay the taxes levied by Congress), or it's just ink on a page somewhere that has no relevance on our lives.

You don't get to pick bits of it you like, and ignore the rest.
