Moxie Marlinspike -- Making Private Communication Simple

Moxie's talk at Webstock in Wellington, NZ (Feb 20, 2015)

"Over the past 20 years, cryptography has been transformed from a poorly understood and scarcely available regulated munition to a well developed and freely distributed technology. However, in contrast to the predictions of 90’s futurists, this has not changed the shape of communication — privacy is likely at an all time low, while surveillance is arguably at an all time high.

This talk will explore some efforts to tip the scales in the other direction." -- Vimeo

TextSecure/RedPhone/Signal has become the de-facto standard for secure mobile communications over the last months. The foundation has been prodded and examined over and over again.

With that in mind, and given the strictly non-commercial/open source approach, I'd say Moxie's project is doing pretty well for the time being.

From what I've seen, other encryption initiatives have had to eventually close down due to litigation, I wonder how this will fare.

Good to hear! Thanks.

Cool! This is about the time 1/3rd of the contributors die in random car accidents or airplane crashes, 1/3rd disappear completely, and the other 1/3rd decide to work on other projects and refuse to ever mention cryptography again.

Holy hell. Stop the presses.

I just read that Facebook bought out Whatsapp.

...You know, I don't care WHAT kind of integration or WHAT kind of cryptography you have. If you are owned by someone who's beating heart IS government surveillance, you can rest assured they are taking steps to make wanna-be-privacy-seekers FEEL secure, despite the reality which is anything BUT secure.

I guess I closed that pessimism tag a little too early...
