Jeff Bliss interview , of Duncanville High School AMAZING!!!

Again I reiterate he's yelling at the wrong person. I'm not scolding him, he's frustrated and rightly so. This is an institutional problem. We could have schools that teach kids to question things and exercise their brains, and think creatively. But thats not what the system wants, power is never going to support the questioning of it's existence.

So this is a systemic problem, it is not the teachers fault, she is simply a cog operating within this system. She's probably been burned out on this and given up a long time ago.

So what?? Let him rant-This is as effective a way as any to hand the shit to the DuncanvilleISD, a critically-thinking student ranting on a worldwide forum.

Change starts with outrage like this and too many people think education in the United States benefits you beyond a ticket to another cog-like existence, a "career"

Perhaps though, Jeff should quit now, get a G.E.D., and get on with living. Or maybe he should run for superintendent.

You know Yogi, the best way to fix systemic social ills in the form of piss-poor eduindoctrination? Pull your fucking kids out of public schools (home school) and encourage others in similar boycotts. But hey, no one can because everyone's working for shit-tickets and has no time-What a conundrum, eh?

Back when I was in High School (not all that long ago, mid 90s), I had a somewhat low opinion of some of my History/Government/Social Studies type classes. A lot of that was because they were *all* hired as teacher/coach combos. I felt like they had a tendency to phone in the teaching bit because what they were really there to do was the coaching. I still think there is a big mismatch between the amount of money and energy spent on sports programs versus academics in public schools.

However, as much as I scoffed at those teachers at the time, looking back they did some of the things this kid is suggesting quite well. They talked with us, discussed and debated issues that came up for whole class periods, trying to get opinions from everyone. They got me/us thinking about things. One of them gave us a project to watch a Hollywood movie about some historical event of our choice and then write and present a report about what facts they got right or wrong. Looking back, I'd have to say that it could have been a heck of a lot worse if they were just expected to teach to some arbitrary standardized test, and their jobs or at least salary depended on yearly improvement in test scores.

So, I think that @Yogi is right and that is probably more of an institutional failing than a bad teacher, although we don't really have any evidence one way or the other from the videos. In spite of thinking that his anger is perhaps directed a bit off of the most important target, he definitely comes across as more reasonable in this interview (which makes sense, he's had time to cool down and consider things more fully). Hope the school doesn't come down on him too hard, if at all.

Children need one year of 'teaching' max, and that is for rudimentary math and learning to read. The rest of 'schooling' should simply be providing them with the proper, quiet, conditions to self-educate. It's called Autodidacticism. Look it up. Every child is born with it, but adults do their best to eliminate it through forced, 24/7 entertainment from the crib to the campus.

Here's a curriculum that needs no teacher (there are many others):

Having no time is absolutely no excuse for failing to homeschool. Anyone want to picket your local school with a sign that says "DROP OUT OF SCHOOL FOREVER!" :-D

I hear what you're saying about athletics/teaching but my best teachers were also coaches. That might have been because they were all honors teachers but that is another issue concerning the unfairness of the two-tier public education system that shortchanges a lot of kids. If you're not honors you get this teacher who hands you no-child-left-behind packets to work on all day.

The only thing that is "amazing" about this is that he is on the news for throwing a tantrum in class.

If you have a bad teacher you don't just walk out of class.

That said there is no evidence this teacher is good or bad...despite all these sifter assumptions that she is awful.

Grow up. Sit down. Do your work.

Wow, looks great. Now how do I get the Christ-free edition?

I am about 14 minutes into the video on that page. It starts off like it is going to be full of Christ-like stuff, but seems to completely go the other way.

All a child needs to be able to learn and discern are fundamentals of critical thinking in the form of basic/complex problem solving in the immediate world around him/her, and the basics squared.

By basics squared we mean the 3R's and about four foreign languages and maybe some musical training, kids can sponge that up and more in the proper environment. You need to thrown in practical tool-making with the daily training, and maybe some martial arts fundamentals.By the time they are seven (age of reason), you'll have MENSA material on your hands, and the makings of a real piece of work.

If you are into history and want to use it as a platform, leave any teaching of religions to the basics and leave the god-as-a-backdrop out of your curriculum. Your kid can make his own choices about the great unknown later, yer preparing a Renaissance child for a steam-punked future that's moving faster than any parent has the capacity to digest, anyhow...Your take on God will only complicate matters.
