It's funny, I laughed, but I feel bad for the guy. It doesn't make him and idiot, and I disagree that it was deserved; it was a harmless prank. Shit happens.

Yeah, felt staged to me too. You can see him turn his head away so that even if he did hit the counter, it would be on his cheek not his mouth. Also listen to the double thump, the first is him hitting his fist on the cabinet on the way down for effect.
