"I will survive" - Nerd Revenge in VH1 Anti-Bully ad

YouTube Description:

The idea of the campaign is to raise awareness about bullying, speaking directly to those "cool" kids who watch the channel. In order to reach them, we knew we had to do something really original that corresponded to the personality and idiosyncrasy of the brand and, more importantly, spoke a language that young people could relate to.

...Yeah, I don't think that "enjoy it now, because when I get older I'm totally going to make your life as a wage slave a living hell" is exactly the best response to bullying.

"It Gets Better" PSAs have a much better approach and more uplifting message.

Nice to see these common sense comments, was going to post a similar thing! When you think the measure of your worth is whether or not you keep low paid slaves and pets around, you know you're a shallow, spiritually bankrupt individual.

In the Adfreak article I linked in the description, David Gianatasio makes similar points, that although the ad is expertly staged and boasting a great cast, and represents great wish fulfillment for the repressed, it ultimately falls flat for failing to actually discourage the bullying behaviour

Even so, breaking the cycle and discouraging the behavior should be the goal, shouldn't it? There's really none of that here. (Contrast VH1's approach with Everynone's short film on bullying from a few years back, which really captured the complexity of the issue.)

Having read that article, and wholeheartedly agreeing with its criticisms... I still posted the ad, because despite failing in its primary mission, I still liked it

Flawed but enjoyable, just don't take it too seriously.

Fair points I guess its confusing for me because they've made it into a fun vid, with good production, so I can't understand why they didn't talk to someone who knew about bullying, it wouldn't have cost them much more.

A couple of interesting things about bullying - firstly, many bullies who bully because of insecurities, depression, loneliness or anxiety are actually people who have been bullied themselves at some point. This begs the question, instead of labeling all bullies as 'bad' people, should we look at ways of getting them psychological help to help break the pattern of poor behaviour they have gotten themselves into?

Also, there are bullies classified as 'pure' bullies, these are people who likely haven't been bullied themselves and also don't suffer from many of the social and emotional problems of other bullies. They can be "skilled social strategists" and bully to enhance their status. They do well academically, socially and emotionally, the main thing they seem to lack is the ability to empathize as well as others.

So really, this is just another example of the problem of stereotyping - with some bullies doing very well for themselves (which kind of debunks the point of this vid), and other bullies bullying because they themselves have been bullied, I think it's not right to just label them all as bad, they may (and probably do) need help too.

Lots of that research is available from this link:

Anyway, just food for thought, thanks for the post!

Question: What do thirteen-year-old bullies do while watching this video?

  • a) They reconsider their behavior and eventually stop bullying their peers.

  • b) They laugh their asses off without listening to the text and try to re-enact scenes from the video the next day.

I can imagine what the ones I used to know would have done.

Hint: It's not a).

Note: This doesn't mean that I believe none of them would choose action a). I believe, however, that most of the bullies I came to know would have chosen b).

These anti-bullying campaigns are always so worthless. No bully is going to suddenly stop bullying just because they are told not to do so. Crass as this may sound, school shootings are probably the most effective deterrent to bullying, though only if the bullies can establish a correlation between the two and believe that a shooting could actually occur at their school. Bullies only do what they do if they think they can get away with it, much like criminals. Fear of reprisal makes them think twice.
