I've been there....more times than I know. Eventually I learned to use leather shoe laces.
In welding class, a friend dropped a huge ball of red hot slag into his doc Martin's. His only option was to run to the urinal and start flushing wildly. He stopped wearing them to class after that.

Why not just use leather welding spats?
