George Carlin: Pilosophy Part 1

I know this is probably a dupe, but I searched and couldn't find the original.

This is some of Carlin at his finest.

part 2 is here

If Carlin didn't care about the outcome, as he repeats again and again, that he has "no stake" in the outcome -- he wouldn't have committed himself so strongly to this position.

I think he cared too much. And it pained himself to see how terribly humans were screwing things up.

I dont know. I love Carlin in many ways, but this is really just postmodern apocalypticism at its worst. He's like this big fucking catastrophe maven, and it sickens me how proud he is of it sometimes.

But I get it: its not like I have to choose between enjoying his routine and caring about the oil spill in the gulf... right???

The end of the US isn't an apocalypse, it's just the fall of yet another empire. Carlin is right on here. I would have loved to have been in Rome near the fall of that empire just to see what kind of symbols of prosperity the damned held on to....

I see your point.

He was very close to the end of his life in these videos (parts 1 & 2), and I think that he could sense that the end was nigh. That could be part of it.

I think the futility took a toll on him. He had been speaking out against the stupidity for so long, and really reaching millions of people, but it didn't make any difference. He saw the sixties come and go, and lo and behold in his twilight years he witnessed the rise of the Bush regime, and two more wars we didn't need.

I think he's quite correct regarding the illusion of choice we have here in the USA, and how voting is but an extension of that illusion.

What I see is a talented, compassionate, brilliant artist who is at wit's end.

In part two he said something like "if you scratch a cynic, you'll find a disillusioned idealist" and he admitted to being such a one.

He was a man who spent most of his life trying to warn everyone that the ship was sinking, but nobody paid attention. I understand fully.

You know why Carlin is so pessimistic? Why he doesn't give a shit?

See George Carlin and the FBI. To which I'm sure he thought that Mr Hoover was clearly over stepping his bounds, and had an impact on his comedy; whether he says so or not. There are so many laws in the US that if you think you aren't breaking any then you are wrong. Carlin was anti-establishment, and he was misanthropic. With good reason. The government is made up of people, and power. Power corrupts. If I had one reason to say what hammered the nail on the head for his career it was the bullshit the FBI put him through.

See also Steven Hatfill who was falsely accused by the FBI and then hounded for a very long time. Hatfill won a shit load of money from the Government for the violation of his rights and damages. The case is titled Hatfill v. John Ashcroft, et al.

I think Carlin is great, but I think that towards the end he had pretty much given up on ever seeing things head in the right direction (as he would wish for). I think that in a very real sense he was correct, but I've not yet completely given up on the future. However, the slow decline is never enough to spark real change.

@Truckchase comparing the US to Rome seems apt, but it is noteworthy that Rome did pretty well and had a long, slow decline from its peak. Also with the British empire.

In evolutionary biology and some other scientific fields there are theories that compare changes over time being slow, steady, and gradual versus what is called "punctuated equilibrium". Punctuated equilibrium suggests that most of the time things are changing at a very slow gradual rate, but occasionally there will be some major event that really shakes things up and changes things drastically over a short period of time. The straw that broke the camel's back, so to speak.

I think that the USA has been in a gradual decline, but we're not past the point of no return. I don't know what the event would be, but I think it is quite possible for something major to shake things up and get us back on an upward trend. On the other hand, it could just as easily be something that cuts our Roman-style slow and dignified march into obsolescence short.

After watching part 2 I am now convinced that Carlin is God, rooting against us and laughing all the way while maintaining an ironic sense of order in His own life. All those religious books? Traps to weed out the foolish. In my opinion, if there is an omnipotent God, the goats are going to heaven and the sheep will be kept in the grave (and occasionally summoned into existence for kicks).
