That said, I don't really understand the Videosift policy on channels. For example, it always seems odd to me that anything with slow motion is timeshift. Shouldn't the timeshift channel be for videos about slow/fast motion, rather than it being clogged by every single slow motion clip? That's what tags are for, I thought. I guess I thought wrong.

The way it's used now the channels are nothing more than additional tags - most of the time.
There are channels which are administrated quite nicely. See Skillful for example.
