Exploring Man of Steel

From the same guy that did the video "WTF Happened to Movie Posters?" and his equally interesting follow up "WTF Happened to Movie Trailers?" does a good video in the defense of Man of Steel, a movie that wasn't perfect but I thought was thoroughly enjoyable, however seems to get an unfair amount of internet vitriol hurled against it.

You're allowed to simply dislike the movie, but I think some of the reasons and downright hatred it recieves from too many nerds that don't like things that are different is a little overblown

I never had a problem with the killing of Zod. I never got those who complained how this movie killed Zod and praised the original '78 movie for the same reason he points out here, the he kills Zod in the '78 film and it is just laughed off while here he shows real remorse. My biggest pet peeve of the movie is that people complaining about him killing Zod... Never got why that upset people.

I did and still do have issue with the wholesale destruction of Metropolis in the fight, but can accept the premise of the video. But it should have been demonstrated more effectively in the film. Clark/Superman should have tried to lead the fight away from the city, then we see Zod ignore him and return to the destruction of humanity, forcing the fight to continue in the city. That simple little scene would have pulled it together and made it obvious that Zod wouldn't allow the fight to happen anywhere else but the city.

All the other issues he mentions and explained I thought were obvious and didn't need an explanation.

Yeah, so halfway through and he's just finished the bit about Sucker Punch. Gonna have to stop you there, buddy. I *have* seen Sucker Punch along with all of Snyders other movies (except the owl thing).

He's a technically gifted director, but he's at his best when he's adapting material (300, Dawn of the Dead). His Watchmen was a solid adaptation of the source material, but it completely missed the point of the original (which was to highlight the strengths of comics as a medium). Stripped of all it's little nuances, Watchmen is a decent if unremarkable superhero movie, whereas the comic is a work of genuine literary innovation.

As for the rest of the video, if you have to make a video like this is explain why the movie is not bad, then clearly the movie failed to connect with it's intended audience. Even if there is an explanation for each of those story points (and his dads death is still retarded), it doesn't matter. Taken as a whole the movie just feels wrong. And frankly, by the end, I was bored. I had no investment in any of the characters.

And the final comment is utter bollocks. Yeah, Superman's been an asshole in the comics. Hell, I've never even really been a fan of Superman (stories involving an indestructible being with near god like strength aren't that interesting). But you've just spent 15 minutes explaining why it's a good movie despite those previous attributes, so I can't respond with my (equally subjective) opinion?

This is a pretty good summary

I was about to write a big long post about my feelings on the movie, and that is when I noticed that RFlagg said everything I was going to say. Well done. =]

In a total coincidence, I just borrowed Man of Steel from a friend and it is sitting beside me at work right now.

Zack Schnyder and Goyer are worse than Michael Bay.
At least Bay didn't make Superman into a violent murderer.

It's kind of a metaphor for what APAC wants America to be.
A killer dog kept on a tight leash

(and Sucker Punch is about empowerment ??!! AH hahahaha)
