Deadmau5 is the best DJ in 10 years

This guy gives me 15 levels of DJ envy. He's been on the scene for a relatively short period, and he's rocking HUGE crowds, has already done his first essential mix on BBC1, and is generally exploding everything everywhere. Maybe it is because he RULES! Check out his live deconstruction of Daft Punk's Harder Better Stronger Faster. AWESOME!

PS: Thanks to farhad2000 for introducing me to this guy. Why haven't you sifted any videos of him yet, bro?

"Deadmau5 is the best DJ in 10 years"

this is pretty lol-tastic considering he barely counts as a DJ and has recently been crucified for his comments in an interview saying "all DJs are cunts".

i can understand his sentiments but it's indicative of someone who plainly doesn't get it.

I realy dont like DJ,s that just DJ other peoples music, if you are realy reconstructing the track into something new then you r not realy DJing anny more you are actualy making new songs. the term DJ is realy undefind in my opinoin like its used for so manny diferent things.

it always seemed to me that you should have to have turntables to be considered a dj? i think djs are generally waaaay overy hyped. some dudes like shadow, mike relm, and rjd2 have gotten really big because they're making things better, but most guys (including this guy in my opinion) just play songs that people like off a laptop and eq it a bit. whoopie.
p.s.
is it just me or is that crowd hardly moving at all?

What every happened to real DJ-ing?

Back in 2000, I watch a friend's video of the scratching world championships. They were using *GASP* records and mixing them right there on stage. The show of skill was amazing. I lived with DJs that would wander old record stores, yard sales, etc looking for a record that spoke to them and then try to figure out how to use it in a set.

I've been out of that scene for a long time and the closest I get now is listening to a trance music station from a local college off and on, but I assume that those people still exist. Or did they get killed off by anyone with a good ear and a laptop?

There are still people like that around, Curiousity.

A guy I know who graduated from my college in 2006 used to DJ, turntablism and all. Still does it, as far as I know. He spins at small events under the moniker DJ Sephiroth. I'm not necessarily the best judge of that kind of music, but his stuff doesn't sound half bad to me.

Just my opinion, but it seems like the good parts are the parts that sample from Daft Punk, and Daft Punk already made (again, my opinion) a much better remix for their live album. This makes me want to go listen to that.

I like the original, but this was cool.

Um, as djsunkid described this, it's a deconstruction of that song, so it only makes sense that this is essentially ALL daft punk, not just samples of it - or are you referring to the obvious audio parts? Hmm.

BTW, yes, he has big crowds, but to the 'mainstream' he's still obscure.

I liked the 2nd song more. Reminds me of acid trance circa 2000.
I think it's pretty cool what he's doing - and i would classify this as live music more than DJ'ing, since he's using samplers efx and drum machines on top of what is probably dj software on his laptop (e.g. Traktor).

He is also a producer so he does make his own, original music

BTW, any1 curious about the micky mouse head thing??? It looked freaky but it's his logo or whatever.. can be seen on his WP: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deadmau5
