Classic Heavyweight Title Fight: Dempsey vs. Willard c. 1919

This was the first time champion-at-the-time Willard had ever been knocked down.

It's interesting to see old boxing rules in effect where Dempsey could stand over Willard after knocking him down and start punching him again before he's even fully standing.

Willard was effectively knocked out at the end of the first round, but he was saved by the bell during the referee's 10 count. His corner threw in the towel before the fourth round started.

Watching I Love Lucy season 2 episode 28, "Lucy Wants New Furniture," and Ethel says Lucy's impending argument with Ricky will be the best fight "since Dempsey fought Willard." I was curious what she was referencing. This is that fight.

I wonder if they add the glove-impact sounds in after the fact.

I think we can owe the quick knockdowns to thinner gloves in the era, but it's interesting to me how less built and physically-extreme the athletes are while still seeming nearly as fast and agile as athletes today.

It's worth mentioning that this kind of thing is the reason larger gloves were adopted in professional boxing. The extra weight of the glove give punches more of an impact and the power to really knock someone out, whereas with lighter gloves, seen here, repeated punches to the head wouldn't necessarily get the job done (and just resulted in brutal, prolonged beatings).
