Christian Missionary Deconverted by Pirahã Tribe

Christian Missionary, Daniel Everett, went to the Pirahã tribe to help "save" them and make them Christians and translate the Bible into their language. In the end they convinced him of the fallacy of religion.
Sadly this video is just a book reading with a slideshow playing over it. If one wants more here is a talk by him: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNajfMZGnuo but doesn't discuss the story in as much detail, although the full speech at Flora might.

On a car trip to and from my Thanksgiving destination, I had long discussions with my (Christian) family about faith. I tried to explain the sense of contentment and dignity I feel facing life without religious comforts and fears, just as this guy describes that sense very well.

I am always comforted by exploring the limits of knowledge. Knowing what I don't know is comforting to me. I like waking up every day knowing I'm ignorant of all sorts of stuff...operating from a sense of curiosity and caution rather than thinking I have everything figured out.

Empiricism > Rationalism > Mysticism

Thanks for the sift.

Everett: "And then I thought, 'perhaps I am just a sheep following whatever society I am involved in. Perhaps I, too, can get my freak on with multiple wives in this forgotten corner of the world where God obviously isn't watching'. I must speak to my wife on this matter"

This is a lame story about a guy who understood nothing about his faith. Typical that it's voted up here on the sift.

If you think this is solely a video about a man waking up from his religion stupor, then you need to look a little deeper.

This is an actual fully atheist culture, no god, no faith, don't believe in anything that can't be seen.. and guess what? They aren't anarchaic, they aren't going around murdering people, hell, they seemingly don't even kill themselves.

Essentially, these people are the proof that Atheists aren't the devil, and that without "Gods moral compass" society can continue without plunging into absolute chaos.

FYI here- nothing in Christianity says any of what you've mentioned. No wonder you and pretty much everyone on the sift think videos like this are so wondrous, if that's the kind of stuff you believe. Maybe look into things properly next time.

So nowhere in the bible does it say that God's way is the only way, and that the world is doomed without him?

Nowhere? Seriously, have you read the bible?>> ^r10k:

Have I? I'm guessing you haven't read the bible, because anyone that has (you know, with their eyes open) wouldn't have thought it was about "the world being doomed without him". Have you been reading too many children's books recently, or what?

Oh right... is that supposed to somehow convince me you know what you're talking about? Wait, don't bother answering that. Of course it is. Carry on in ignorance and confusion, by all means. That is the Videosift way.

EDIT: I see 'oh right' is the term of the day. Well done us.

You haven't actually presented any argument in anything you've said. You're only saying "look at things properly" and "this is typical of videosift".

What's proper? Enlighten us. What is it exactly that you think the majority of sifters believe? Also, judging by most controversial video threads, sifters couldn't agree their way out of a friggin' paper bag.

Dumb quoting system is dumb.

Your ad hominem is typical of "Christians".

Your rhetoric is typical of a clueless person.

...those links made me actually laugh out loud, hard.

Of course those links made you laugh out loud. They made me laugh out loud too... just for a completely different reason.

And mgittle, the reason I don't bother debating points is for the reason you mentioned- sifters generally have no clue how to debate points. I've seen Christian discussions before, and they always amount to a waste of time. Of course, despite that fact I felt to make a comment

You're only saying "look at things properly" and "this is typical of videosift".

Exactly. Two things about Videosift- firstly and obviously, everyone is highly self-opinionated. For people like that who claim they have a brain, all I can say is, "You're wrong." and suggest they fire up the old noggin and do some proper research. The second thing is, and as I've mentioned, the various attitudes towards certain topics sifters have are plain to see. That's just a comment, since this kind of poorly conceived anti-Christian rubbish gets voted up time and time again. Although it's true many Christians are clueless in terms of this topic, this place certainly holds its own by comparison when it comes to clueless people.

Anyway, troll session over. Debate with poor comments amongst yourselves if you must.

mgittlesays...

@r10k

Please give at least one link to a website that has what you consider proper research.

You're continuing to criticize without listing any reasons and you say you've given up because everyone here is clueless, but then you won't defend your statements. Lumping "sifters" into one big category and then attacking that category instead of anyone's individual statements is a pretty good way of making sure lots of people think you're an asshole, and it's an extremely terrible way of getting any sort of point across.

You say sifters generally have no idea how to debate points, and yet you make tons of ad hominem attacks and make indefensible statements, which is not only ironic, but also suggests you're not worried about evidence or reason.

What is incredible is how those native people had more commonsense that most Americans. I yes there is something definitely evil about religion. Funny how his family rejected him because of religion and how the native accepted them even when their beliefs were different.

Great food for thought in the video for religious people. Yet another dimension to create conflict.
