Cheetahs Get Workout At Horse Racing Track

Cheetahs need to run. Kito and Kiburi, residents at the Houston Zoo, get to stretch their legs at a race track. (BuzzFeed)

YouTube Description:

The Houston Zoo cheetahs enjoy stretching their legs out while running at the Sam Houston Race Park. Running is a natural behavior for cheetahs in the wild, so the staff at the Houston Zoo want to promote this behavior by encouraging them to run - this is called "enrichment."For more on animal enrichment and the Houston Zoo, visit http://www.houstonzoo.org.

In Houston, we let cheetahs play down to the horse track on off days....You think you get to see that at Saratoga or the Aquaduct NYC?? ...

Wonder what would happen if they let cheetahs out at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, CA?? The cats might just think they'd been taken back to the Plateau continent!

It's not ideal, but keep in mind that many zoos these days take part in essential breeding programs that help maintain healthy wild populations. Cheetahs are one of the best examples where zoological breeding programs are beneficial because cheetahs are very inbred in the wild and the health of many wild populations suffer greatly because of it.

Right, you've had your fun, now back in your crappy little enclosure.

Sorry, can't say this makes me even slightly happy.

I appreciate that, but I don't have to like it.

All that time in what is to them essentially a 6x9 cell, they finally get let out, only to bite down on a bunch of polyester and nylon. The least they could do is drag a gazelle haunch down the runway for them!
