It's about to again (EU vs MS on anti-trust) - this time over Vista (was due to ship monday, got legal proceedings tomorrow). Going to be an interesting few days for Microsoft in Europe...

I think Vista will do poorly at first, Windows XP is not amazing but it's better then 98SE or 2000 combined. With the regular updates it has been receiving from both Microsoft, the hardware and software industry there is very little reason to move up to Windows Vista. There are very few drastic advantages, you will be basically paying for a visual upgrade mostly, which will suck your performance out, your HDD will be eaten by the gigantic installation...

Unless you are of course purchasing a new computer, in that case you won't be able to find anything but a Vista based system soon. Of course over time, the hardware changes to new standards will make the entire market shift, however at this time I can't really argue a way to purchase a new system now , hedge your bets and wait is my take. The new incoming hardware will make all current gen stuff even cheaper then it was, especially format changing stuff like motherboard standards, hardware connection standards, PCI-Express, Dual Core and Direct X10 capable hardware. As the market adjusts the prices will start dropping to nominal levels as they are ridiculously high right now, so much so that it will increase diversion to console systems I believe (since the hardcore video game market drives innovation and development).

Take my case for example I have a Pentium IV 2.4GHZ 800MHZ with a ATI RADEON X800GTO PRO, my system is DirectX 9 compatible but, it is at the below average level of performance in modern games. However for me to upgrade I would have to chuck the mobo, cpu, ram, psu, video card and then repurchase all of those components. The optimal system is within the $3000 range that way, something that will drop drastically within the next 4 months.

Though trust me, there will be more residual users of XP systems in the Vista era, then there were 98 and 2000 systems running in XP's time.
