Problems. You Aussies' chime-in and tell us how it's working??
charliemsays...

Those figures are bogus. This video is a fucking total joke.
Ive got direct family members that have been in the police force since the early 70's....they are not shitkickers, so to speak.

Home intrustion in the period 1996 to 2006 had dropped in HALF (http://www.aic.gov.au/documents/0/B/6/%7B0B619F44-B18B-47B4-9B59-F87BA643CBAA%7Dfacts11.pdf)

In the period 1989 - 2010, gun related murders have MORE THAN HALVED.

FUCK the NRA, and FUCK this video. Nothing but propoganda.

Hmmm. Ok fucj it. I'll go and find a video with Aussies praising the confiscation of their property and rendering the place crime-free...ish.

This is more for the country that's headed towards a colossal fist-fuck because of politicians (criminals), pharmaceutical companies (insulated from mention by all major media and, not surprisingly, self-pimping turds without a clue like TYT, one of THE most flaccid, non-journalistic cretinfests on the web) who help to "create" mental-health problems larger than they need to be by unleashing damaged goods full of legal drugs prescribed by complicit doctors. Step in, the magic wand of unraveling and deconstruction of the U.S. Constitution by appointed and approved, so-called scholars from Harvard(oh hey, the same place not a few of the cunts who run the country hailed-from) to "provide" a solution for a problem that they created and you have the slow-motion train-wreck of the coming police state in one of the best places to be on the planet.

Everything is propaganda sparky, it's your job to wade through what you perceive to be bullshit, kinna like I'm wading thorough yours without really wanting to argue.

Brave New World. Newsflash: Eliminate gun-free zones, arm yourselves against an agenda to let mental health monstrosities roam the place un-checked on hardcore psychotropics with guns STOLEN from their fucked-up mommy, and don't ask a country who will hide their guns from a government determined to take them ALL away to accept anything less than a sane solution to what is primarily a problem created by the people with the MOST money, power, and influence.

Tell me why the pharmaceutical companies shouldn't be having their asses dragged across the coals on television for their part in mass-murder? Answer: Because they have more power and money than a gun lobby.

Again, I give fuck-all about loaded facts and figures form any side of the aisle, they mean dick because the real issue lies in governments fist-fucking their citizens. Shame on the the Brits for letting their government take their shit away and shame on the Aussies for letting the Crown fuck them as well.

There was a gun buy-back, it wasn't a confiscation.

It was a while ago but I don't remember anyone promising that the revised regulations were going to make the country crime-free, they were specifically aimed at reducing mass shootings. In fact, since mass shootings are rare, they probably saved more lives by reducing suicides.

Choggy, Australia is nothing like the US. We actually have oversight on our government.....and shit gets called out by the public here. Unlike the US, EVERYONE despises politicians, it keeps them in check.

Our elections over the past 12 years alone have been solid proof that if they do one small fuck up, they are on their ass looking for a new job.

Using my country as an excuse to prop up your heinous gun laws is attrocious at best, as your arguments are all strawmen. Find someone else to pin your ludicrous and outdated hopes and dreams on, australia wont have it mate.

oritteroposays...

It's not exactly recent, is it. Trevor Griffin retired from the South Australian Parliament in 2002. It actually looks like part of a local South Australian current affairs report from just after the laws were passed that has been re-edited as a criticism of the national program.

The moral of the story, is it possible to take footage from Australian tv and either edit it to make us look like nongs, or just find source material that already makes us look like nongs? Why, yes! That is entirely possible.

Kofisays...

It was a confiscation policy. All guns that were banned HAD to be handed in. This was easily enforced by our mandatory gun registration laws in most states (except in Tasmania where the massacre that trigger this scheme occurred). People could hand in any gun they wanted even if it wasn't banned. I am not sure if there was compensation involved.

One stupid outcome was that many antique and rare guns were destroyed rather than rendered inopporeable or transferred to museums etc. My neighbour handed in a very valuable double barrell shotgun that was destroyed despite it being legal. He didn't want it anymore and like manny citizens took advantage of the amnesty to dispose of it.

You can still own pump action and semi-auto guns. You just need a special license for them. To get the license you need an especially good reason to need such weapons. There are strict regulations surrounding their storage and use. That said, my brother got a job as a pest controller for a class D license which enabled him to have grenade launchers if he wanted.

tl:dr - Australians have a very sensible approach to guns. You didn't see any whining about self protection in this vid did you?

Sepacoresays...

This video contains disingenuous information. Those statistics are completely false.

@chingalera It's working a lot better than the current USA situation. Here's a few legitimate facts relating to the content in that video.

1. You can still buy guns (pistols, rifles, shotguns), just not the ridiculously unjustified mass human slaying variants.
2. It's better controlled with systems setup to decrease the chance of consistently unstable minds getting hold of guns of any type.
3. Gun homicides were increasing leading up to the gun control (1996), from that peak to now, it's about a 59% drop.
4. 1996-2006 about 65% drop in gun suicides.
5. Robberies involving guns dropped significantly.
6. There was no increase in home invasions.
7. In the 10 years leading up to the gun control there were 11 mass shootings.. since gun control went into affect, there have been 0.

Homicide weapon statistics (image): Guns vs Knives from 1989/90 to 2006/7
Quick answer: 50% drop for guns, 30% rise for knives
http://aic.gov.au/statistics/homicide/weapon.html

"A 2011 letter published in the British Medical Journal by Simon Chapman, a professor of public health from the University of Sydney, observed that the U.S. had 14.4 times the population of Australia but 141 times as as many deaths from firearms in 2008 as Australia and 238 times the rate of firearms-related homicide."
http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/talking-back/2012/12/20/gun-control-searching-down-under-for-change-to-believe-in/
If the current ratio's are even remotely similar to this quote, then Americans can't say jack about the Australian statistics.

@charliem Good links mate.

Upvote for the 'Lies' tag.

I thought i smelled something fishy, those figures would've been the first in the whole history of humankind.

When was leaded gas&paint banned in the Australia? Would be nice to see that graph there too..

oritteroposays...

Starting from 1986 all new cars had to be able to run on unleaded petrol, but the actual end date for sale varied according to where you were... but around 2002 (it was pretty uncommon anyway once most cars ran on unleaded, I thought it had been phased out years earlier). Given that there is a 20 year lag between changing lead levels and behavioural changes, it should be showing up starting from 2006.

Lead based house paint hasn't been common since 1970 (source).

Which figures did you find fishy?
