up-vote for classic scifi. How I long for another scifi movie like this to come along. And I don't mean the mostly terrible sequels, though some of them had their moments.

Most of the time, I never understand why they cut certain shots from scenes as they can really help flesh out a story. (ie. LOTR) However, in this case, I do like the original scene better. Regardless, upvote for one of the best (if not THE best) sci-fi horror movies out there. The only other movie that could touch it would be Carpenter's The Thing.

Bit of a continuity problem with the position of Kane's hands.

If you watch the special features, it says that a good amount of the atmosphere in this scene was due to the fact that, until the alien bursts out of his chest, non of the actors knew what it was going to look like. Or that they would be sprayed with copious amounts of blood when it did come out.

The original cut was much better...much tighter...much more suspenseful. This would be considered a "rough cut" and the editor was right when it was cleaned up.

Yeah I don't think adding footage helps the scene. It's scarier if you just get a look at the chestburster for a moment before it disappears.
