Actual disturbing, and banned Sesame Street Song

If I make friends with a friendly monster,
I'll let him bounce me on his knee.
I'll let him do whatever he wants ta,
Especially if he's bigger than me.

I'm having a really hard time seeing anything inappropriate with the song or the video! How hyper-sensitive do you have to be to call for something like this to be banned?

ObsidianStormsays...

Yeah I think you have to kind of be looking for the naughty in this one.

At the time this was produced, the kind of depraved behavior alluded to in the title and tags, while certainly extant, was not in the public eye and would not have come to mind for the vast majority of viewers.

Was this banned at the time? Or simply in the later, more sensitive, decades that followed?

"Banned" by whom?

I flat out refuse to believe that even one tenth of the "banned" videos posted were actually "banned" by anyone, ever. I think it's just a clever ploy to get people to watch.

atarasays...

Most of the "banned" videos are not banned at all. Banned video means some government agency (aka the FCC) has forbidden the video to be shown. Banned books are barred by the (publicly funded) school system.

In actuality, almost every "banned" video I've seen has simply been excluded by the copyright owner when the DVD collection is released. This is usually a marketing decision, and has nothing to do with government action.

I'm not saying that I agree with the exclusions on the DVDs (some of the better Loony Tunes clips were excluded from the DVD collections, but I do take issue with misuse of the word "banned."

Now let's just hold on there a second. First of all you should downvote based on the title for the use of the word ban. It's still a creepily lyrical song from Sesame Street. Second the use of the word "ban" in general is vague. No it does not have to be some sort of government sanctioning to enforce banishment. Any authority can ban something including the body in charge of said programming. Executives in charge of Sesame Street could have banned it (since they repeat many things often) simply because they wised up to the connotations exuded in the lyrics. In fact you give examples of various levels of authority in your comments. If one school board bans a book do all? Of course not. Like wise if one up tight community complains about the content and that PBS station refuses to air (it is public broadcast and the programming is not standard nationwide) then the video has in fact been banned since one station refused to air it.

Doesn't matter to me though since the video still made me laugh.
