Thoughts on Creationism - A Christian Perspective

It's OK to be gay, dude

drattus says...

She's been on my subscription and friends list on YouTube for some time, added soon after Thunderf00t, cdk007, AronRa and others and that's where I heard about her and why I checked to see what she had to say. As far as I can tell she's about what she claims to be and is a regular part of the YouTube atheist community. Recently they did a blog TV benefit drive for Doctors Without Borders and raised over $32,000 for them in a 24 hour event, she hosted one of those hours along with lots of other names whose videos we've got posted here, and some of them have met her.

Is it possible that there's a lonelygirl15 thing happening? Maybe, but I doubt it. I haven't seen any signs of it yet. If so she's fooled a lot of people brighter than most of us are.

The Militarization of the Police Force

drattus says...

Raverman, that's garbage and that's a good part of why they've gotten away with the level of militarization and control that they have.

More promiscuous? Ever heard of the 60s? Hell, penny arcades showed porn almost as soon as film was developed, turn of last century or so, search vintage porn and you might find more than you expect. Great Grandpa probably liked his porn too.

More violent? Bullshit. Crime rates have fallen and fallen again since the 60s and 70s and the biggest part of why they were as high as they were then is simple demographics. Young people are more likely to test the limits than older ones and the baby boom generation was just hitting their prime. Combine the age with the boldness large numbers of them would offer and you've got yourself some statistics. And statistics that fell on their own as those youth grew up and invested in the system rather than in rebellion. Crime rates in most areas that matter are just a fraction today of what they used to be, but the news coverage is better so we HEAR about more of it.

We don't have neighbors and community largely because of us. We don't give a damned anymore. We've become so used to having our thoughts and opinions spoon fed to us by the press or politicians that we've forgot how to read a paper or do research, come to a decision on our own.

There's a documentary here on the sift you might want to watch. It's called "The Century of the Self" and it examines how psychology first started to be used to manipulate people into buying products through advertising then when the politicians realized how useful it could be they started to use it as well. Over the last 100 years we've progressively been made more and more unthinking and dependent and we've got nobody to blame for it but ourselves, because we allowed it. It was just easier to let someone else do the thinking. If you want to know where we are today and why this is a decent start.

Hot Romanian Girl Takes Kirk Cameron's Book Video Apart

She's not hot, she's smart. And although her delivery leaves much to be desired, it's a definite upvote for the BURRRRRRRRRN
I wonder what's the ankh on her neck for though.

The ankh on her neck is a relic of her childhood, she explained that in a video some time back. Starting at about 2:30 into the tag video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnEDm8M1cB4

In short it's an Egyptian symbol of life and she had a dream about it when she was a kid then saw one and bought it, she's worn it ever since.

Someone else, Drachen_Jager, asked "What's with the fake film grain and scratches look though?"

It's not fake, she's actually from and in Romania and her equipment really sucks that badly. I've been surprised for a while that one of her fans didn't just send her a new one, but either they haven't or she has some pride and doesn't want it. Most of her videos are like that though.

I've got no problem with the fact that this happened, it might have been legitimate self defense and we don't have all the facts yet. But I am getting pretty sick of these brainless twits acting like something really cool happened. My bet would be that they've never seen a lot of blood themselves, let alone inflicted the damage. There are smells, sights and sounds that they don't include in the movies for some reason. Living with it later isn't all that easy sometimes either.

Nothing good or cool happened here. Justified self defense maybe, but that kid is probably going to have nightmares over this, he'll be seeing it for years. Trained soldiers and cops don't tend to come home and tell war stories for a reason and this kid wasn't trained.

CNN Ad Responds to Fox News Lies

drattus says...

There's a relevant article I saw on this recently and a longer attached clip someone can sift if the want. I'll include a quote from near the end of the article though. Rick Sanchez is pissed and explaining the difference between reporting an event and promoting an event.

SANCHEZ: Here's the fact. We did cover the event. What we didn't do is promote the event, just like when thousands marched on Washington to protest the war in Iraq, we covered it as well, probably less than we covered this event. But we didn't promote it.

Bottom line is, we do cover the news. And we did extensively cover this event. We didn't promote the event. That's not what real news organizations are supposed to do. We covered the event.

I would invite you to look into that distinction between those two words, promote and cover. Cover is kind of like a fair and balanced way of doing things. You get it? You might want to look into that.

I have been accused of racism(anyone against obama racist?) (Politics Talk Post)

drattus says...

This whole debate is just stupid. I had to go over this on another forum recently as well because apparently neither the media nor many of us actually listened to what Carter said. For the media the reasons are obvious, inflammatory headlines sell newspapers and boost ratings, but for the life of me I can't see why we buy into it.

What Carter said in the video I saw was "I think an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man, that he's African American".

Now he didn't say all opposition was racist, he said the intensely demonstrated animosity toward him was. The right hated Clinton too but they didn't claim he wasn't legitimate, they weren't so insistent that he was a communist, foreign born, or that he was doing anything more than following policies and moral practices that they didn't like. They hated him sure, but there was a thread of sanity under it. They could at least explain why most of the time.

Some of the opposition to Obama these days is the same. But much of the the intensely demonstrated animosity seems to be rooted in an irrational hatred that often does seem to have connections to racism. In the video I saw Brian Williams prefaced the clip with the fact that they were discussing specific signs and events at the protests and it seemed to me to be in response to that rather than a blanket accusation as so many seem convinced it was.

Other than the fact that the media needs ratings and we tend to be a bunch of suckers who don't actually check things, I'm not sure why we're even having this debate. It certainly isn't for our benefit.

Constitution gives us the right to travel

drattus says...

>> ^rosser99:

Hollywood Bob - I agree with you entirely in spirit. However, for the sake of fair play, firearm ownership is stated directly in the Bill of Rights, whereas both driving and health care are not to be found in the Constitution.
With that said, as a human being, I do personally believe health care is much more a right than driving or weapon ownership.

The whole "it's a right/privilege" thing misses an important point or two. What exactly is a "right" in the first place?

Women didn't have the right to vote before they got out there and raised hell, minorities of other sorts didn't have any rights at all before we fought a war. We didn't have a right to own guns or anything else until we fought a different war with Britain and wrote the rights for ourselves. We never had a "right" to anything that we didn't take, and we never kept a right we didn't enforce. When we do stop enforcing them we end up with things like "free speech zones". I used to think the whole country was a free speech zone, but when we stopped paying attention during the Bush years it turned into little approved boxes out of camera view where nobody could see the protest. Go figure, who knew we had to care about and enforce rights to keep them?

People act like a "right" is something observable and definable such as the grass or the sun, but a "right" is whatever we decide it is and it always has been. If we want, or don't want, a right to health care it's no more or less out of line than that right to own guns or to vote was. It's just a matter of if we're willing to fight and take it or not. Once we make that decision writing it down, as in the gun ownership example, just makes it official. But it was the fight that granted the right in the first place.

Bobknight33: To Ban or Not To Ban (Controversy Talk Post)

drattus says...

Maybe I'm missing something here but I didn't see him getting abusive with anyone. His comments are both distasteful and wrongheaded but as far as that goes I always liked the attitude of Thomas Jefferson at his 1801 Inaugural Address. The nation was teetering on the edge of collapse and the attitude he took was the following.

If there be any among us who would wish to dissolve this Union or to change its republican form, let them stand undisturbed as monuments of the safety with which error of opinion may be tolerated where reason is left free to combat it.

If it was good enough then it's good enough now. Let me know when a rule is broken rather than a distasteful opinion expressed. As far as I can tell reason is still free enough to combat it, here at least. Our media, that might be another story.
