Ronda Rousey breaks Web Host's Ribs

SquidCap says...

It's very hard to differentiate ribs breaking and massive blunt trauma on that area. Something i found out after a wrestling match with one feisty woman where she landed on my ribs flying knees first taking me down... She was a stripper at a time and athletics to match. The doctor said that the pain is the same and only x-rays solved that nothing broke but i had a massive bruising under the ribs. Takes about same time to heal as bone injury too.

The costume designers fault, you don't put anything on a knot that is meant to be yanked off. You use tiny strips of velcro or just simple thread, anything that will break off easily and way before actor loses balance. Knots are horrible unreliable in these situations. What i was more amazed off was that she wasn't lipsyncing this time.

Blank on Blank - Lou Reed on Guns & Ammo

SquidCap says...

Yup, same here. He made it sound like they were the only group that did anything worth anything back then. They would've never gotten anywhere without Warhol using his fame and promoting them extensively and were just stupidly artsy fartsy and pretentious; the mega-hipsters of the day.

I think why he disliked Beatles was that their debut album was released at the same time as Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.. Warhol got them record contract in the first place and the album bombed (allthou has some legendary songs, no doubt) but without him no one would've heard about them since of before.

Also Reed has probably the worst "rock" album on his merit: Metal Machine Music.. Some idiots take that album seriously It's just two guitars leaning against amplifiers...

American Kids Try Breakfasts From Around the World

SquidCap says...

Nope, we don't eat salmon for breakfast. It is much more boring, sandwiches, porridge, coffee, milk, bacon&eggs, cornflakes, juice, that sort of things.. Salmon is way too expensive to have on breakfast... If you happen to have it, yeah maybe but not everyday..

But we may have horse or reindeer meat in the sausage (meetwurst) on our the sandwhich... We don't eat horse as a dish but it is often mixed in the sausage, it has to be seasoned strongly, so it fits in quite well and you don't need a lot of it. Reindeer of course is more common and less controversial as it's traditionally herded in Lapland and can be a full dish. "Poronkäristys", loosely translated as Reindeer Fry Stew is pretty good served with lingonberry jam and mash potatoes but it's a bit expensive.

Too bad they didn't have reindeer in there, that would've freaked the kids the hell out: "you are eating Peter the Rednose reindeer"

Fascinating autism test for "theory of the mind" in children

SquidCap says...

Hmm, i don't know if it is that.. I see this all the time too (i tutor and do support to one 3D design software). Usually it is more about the person not knowing the right terms; they don't know what questions to ask or how to identify the problem, the steps that we "computer literate" know to do when we encounter a problem.

Fortunately we have screencaps, allthou often you need to teach them how to make them. I usually try to be thorough, even thou it means spending a lot of time explaining, trying to show them the way for them to solve the problem..

But then again, my "clients" are not totally illiterate which makes it a bit easier but then again, 3D design has very special concepts and terms you need to know; you just can't say "your UV mapping is screwed" when they hardly know what a vertex is.. So you have to explain the very basics of it to solve a problem that takes about a minute if they would send me their models.. I do make them all watch about an hour of videos and read few pages, very often they figure it out once they understand the logic and know the basic terms; they can use google to find it out then.. Teach a man to fish type of strategy.

But it's not that they have some mental defect, they just don't know how the freaking machine works, they have no other words to use but vague, totally gibberish. And they are afraid of using some term they are not 100% sure if it's the right one, a bit like talking a strange language.

I've always said this "Sally-Anne" scenario doesn't just reveal something about the autistic mind. I see it in people every day, particularly as an IT tech. Some people just don't have an intrinsic understanding that others are not seeing the images in their head when they are describing something, using vague pronouns and ambiguous terms that make sense in their head. They are incapable of "reading my mind" to know that I can't read their mind.

They don't seem to understand that others were not in the room experiencing their computer problems along with them, and then act put out while I ask 20 questions to ask them to describe what the hell is going on. Usually with an impatient air of "why am I asking all of these redundant questions? "

And it has nothing to do with being computer literate, and everything to do with not recognizing that I don't share your perspective without some more info. I work with many techno-phobes who don't have to be coached like that.

BTW, repeating"I can't log in, it won't let me" has been used to describe countless scenarios, you might as well ask me to guess which card you just picked out of a deck.

All the ghostly sounds that are lost when compressed to mp3

SquidCap says...

A bit misleading. MP3 is stored as frames, uncompressed audio is not. This causes tiny phase differences that when nulled causes the differences to be much larger than what they actually are. Don't get me wrong, the resulting sound resembles what we hear in this clip, just with LOT less transients (beginning of sound, for ex "t" in "the"). If you want a true difference between MP3 and uncompressed, it needs to be resynced each frame. The further the clip advances, the differences grow to be larger and larger as the two streams drift apart more and more.

Last Week Tonight: Tobacco's Legal Bullies

SquidCap says...

Not just TPP.. TTIP is the same but for Atlantic countries, EU - USA. They both also have clauses that prohibits boycotting or giving out negative reviews, anything that may cause loss of profit. They also have parts dedicated to copyright, denying free-for-use and to demanding the highest prison times for anyone sharing anything, denying the rights for stripping DRM from material you own...

I would be here the whole day if i would type each and every ridiculous thing those two "trade agreements" have but essentially they both deny independent nations to make ANY laws that may cause loss of PROJECTED profits.. Not just loss of profits but profits they might lose in the future..

And the court that solves these problems.. wait for it.. is independent jury with three private sector lawyers, no rights to defend nor to be even present, decisions are all secret. In practice three guys selected by corporations make a decision based on the evidence presented by corporations... It is sick and twisted "trade agreement" that is designed to maximize profits, to strip away environmental laws, regulations, worker rights, demands that nation HAS to privatize all of it's services if any corporation so wishes or face the "court"..

Our Women Should Not Be Allowed to Drive Lest They Get Raped

SquidCap says...

If you really watched the video you noticed that all the other guests were laughing in disbelief.. Which makes me think you didn't even watch it, just came here to spread you hate.

BTW, every time a person says that ISIS (or what ever terrorist organization is trending) should be killed only proves to be equally monstrous. I've seen people wishing to torture them, skinned alive, burned, genitals crushed.. Why is it justified if you do it but not when someone else is doing it?

I can bet that you are white christian male and yet your language is indistinguishable from the extremists You are no better, basically you are worse: you have no first hand experience, no personal reason to hate muslims but still you are more than willing to kill them and innocent peaceloving muslims in Indonesia, UK, France, Germany or USA indiscriminately...

That is the language of a frustrated teenager who has no idea what he is saying or why he is saying it. Grow up and develop some balls and maybe one day you're allowed in the grownups table, until then: shut up. If you are not a teenager, then you are just stupid.

So stop treating animals like human beings. Millions upon millions of muslims think like this and every time you kill one you raise the average intelligence and moral character of the human race.

Baffled by Stupidity: Richard Dawkins

SquidCap says...

Life.

If you need someone to tell you what is the meaning of your life to you, there is a long journey inwards you have failed to make. Most don't do it because of fear and are just happy to be empty shells built upon the ideals of others. It is not really your life then, is it? The journey is fucking scary one and one can not trust upon gods to make it thru. You can have them as companions, for solace but not as guides or helpers.

BTW, you will never find the whole answer and the one told to you by someone else is not it either.. No one knows the answer and wondering about that is the most wonderful thing to have. This puts your inner morale in to question: do you have it or are you relying on someone else to tell it to you? How is that any better, to ruin one of the most wonderful part of your life which is asking questions all the way to your grave. My journey thought me that my moral is the same with or without religion, only thing that changed was that the outside matched the inside; there was no more pretending to be holier than i am. I'm true humanbeing now, full and i can enjoy the miracles of life as they really are.

Why do mirrors flip horizontally (but not vertically)?

SquidCap says...

When you think about it hard enough you come in to conclusion that since the only external self-image we have are from looking at mirrors and that the mirror actually shows you back-to-front.. (shudder...)

You know when you look at a photo of yourself and it looks really really odd? That is because pictures are in normal order along depth axis, which means they are not reflections, you are not used to seeing yourself that way. The tiny tiny little details only you know so well are all reversed in your head and thus the creature from blue lagoon is what your brains see in that photo. Only others see you as you really look... And only you know how it looks from inside out, ie, depth axis reversed.

So in a sense, every time you look at yourself in the mirror, you are inside out.

Why people from northern Sweden sound like vacuum cleaners

We do this too, a bit differently: "hjuup", coming from "yup", "jup" or "jep" but often it's just the same sound as in this video.. I live in west coast of Finland, we have plenty swedish speaking natives here.
