He's not simulating the distortion, he's using a distortion pedal. You see it more clearly in his live show, but even in this video you can see him turn it on. Still pretty amazing though.

The driver has a steering wheel to hold onto. Also when you are the driver it's easier to anticipate the forces and adjust your body tension accordingly, because well, you are controlling the car after all.
