E=mc² is wrong?

Ariane says...

E=mc^2 is not wrong. There are two kinds of energy, potential energy and kinetic energy. (actually there are more kinds, like caloric energy, but that's not relevant) An apple hanging in a tree has potential energy based on the force of gravity exerted on it, and the distance to the ground. As the apple falls to the ground, that potential energy gets converted into kinetic energy, and the law of conservation of energy says that potential energy and kinetic energy are equal. You have force = mass x acceleration and work = mass x distance, and the conversion factor between force and work is velocity squared, so the kinetic energy exerted in moving the apple from the tree to the ground is the mass x velocity squared.

In terms of kinetic energy E=mc^2 is correct. The E^2 version is the potential energy version, which is actually a more useful version, but both are correct.

I don't get global warming. I can't separate the truth from the lies in this case. It seems to me it was just a few months ago that someone obtained all kinds of documents to show that the scientists leading the charge to deal with global we're actually forging lots of their evidence. Litterally. Isn't that what happened?

Nope, only in the twisted imaginations of Fox News

There were scandalous memos detailing how to trick journalists and science magazines and so on.
Then, I didn't hear much more about that. I didn't hear their defense. I didn't hear anyone's outrage at the lies etc.
Wtf happened with that?

Those attacking the memos, calling them scandalous, were lying. People who actually looked at the emails themselves found that claims of fudging evidence was completely unfounded. See http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2009/11/the-cru-hack/

Also, I've heard others say what Winston said about the scientists lying about global warming to keep their jobs. Sounds likely to me. Their GLOBAL WARMING scientists if global warming was proven untrue tomorrow they'd have no job. Seems like motivation to lie.

Stop going to Rush Linbaugh and Fox News for your "news". If you really follow the money there are billions of dollars spent by the oil and gas industry paid to ad agencies, think tanks, lobbyists, etc. The climate scientists salaries pale in comparison.

Chomsky: We Shouldn't Ridicule Tea Party Protesters

Ariane says...

" History has proven that to be a blatant falsehood. Giving money to government programs does not reduce poverty, help the poor, or in any way improve the issues in society."

What history books are you reading Winstonfield? Never in the entire history of civilization has a "Libertarian fiscal conservative" government ever succeeded in creating a stable social environment. Not once! Why? Because it flies in the face of human nature. The world is not so super simple that we can teach everyone to be rugged individualists and then we will not need government at all. Before it will even have a chance to work you need an even playing field, and that does not exist and probably never will exist, thanks to human nature again.

Conservative thinkers know this, which is why pure conservatism = dictatorship. If you don't believe me, turn off the talk radio and crack open a book. Read the philosophers that inspire conservatism, like Plato and his "Philosopher King" or John Burke's defense of royal fiat.

Conservatism does not create a paradise like Galt's Gulch, it leads to places like Haiti, and Zimbabwe, and Somalia. "Liberalism" leads to high standards of living, like Denmark, Sweden, Finland and the fast recovery of Germany. These countries are technologically more advanced, better educated, have higher average incomes, better medical care, and longer life spans than us Americans. Yet they are (falsely) labeled "socialist" and are considered places we should not follow as examples.

Think for yourself!

Fascinating. Especially since I have a gigabit wireless N router that is 20,000 times faster than this the size of a paperback book sitting in my living room.

Know Your Meme: AutoTune - With Professor Weird Al Yankovic

Ariane says...

I've hated auto-tune since the first time I heard it. It has pretty much ruined American Pop over the last decade for me. Worst is when a really talented singer like Shakira jumps on the auto-tune bandwagon, making her entire "She Wolf" album into dog shit.

Oh, and just remeber boys and girls, Mitt Rommey, IS, a Mormon. As a resident of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, this guy should NEVER be taken seriously nor trusted. He's a political slut. He will say and do ANYTHING, if it gets him elected to office. But, he did get health care system into the legal system a few years ago. But then, as the saying goes, the road to Hell is paved in good intentions. Of course, the road goes right down the center of the church for LDS.

Glenn Beck is Mormon too.

But then so is Democrat Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

The real name of "Pillock" is Quentin Tarantino, who is apparently a better film director than a game designer. The voice work on this game was done by Eliza Dushku BTW, and since Yahtzee failed to complain about the voice acting, apparently she did a good job.

Truth is always black and white. Either something is true or not.

You misunderstand. Truth is never found in absolutes. Capitalism vs Socialism: both flawed, the truth is in the middle somewhere. Liberalism vs. Conservatism: the truth is in the middle somewhere also. Pick any extreme views that supposedly hold the answer to our salvation, total bullcrap!

These guys are arguing one extremist view, by arguing the opposite extremist view is flawed, and taken as a given (sans proof) that all the middle ground positions are just as bad as the opposite extremist view. My position is that all extreme "principled" views are crap.

Right now the country is hotly debating Government vs Free Enterprise, and very few seem to care that both are failing miserably.

government managed capitalism=plutocracy

Ariane says...

"pretty black and white" Bullshit! Truth is never black and white. Do you want to know why we have never tried Adam Smith style free markets? Because the free markets only work when there is a level playing field. A true level playing field cannot exist without seizing all money and dividing it equally. Since that isn't going to happen, instead we need Government to at least enforce the rules.

It won't let me down vote this crap.

Chomsky: Libertarianism vs. American Libertarianism

Ariane says...

Chomsky is first and foremost a linguist. Agree or disagree with his politics, he is right on one thing: we keep changing definitions of words for the purpose of propaganda: Conservative, Liberal, Libertarian, Socialist, Communist, Fascist, Nationalist, Globalist, all mean different things today than the traditional meaning.
