Well, he says the old testament was written to straighten the Jews out, which is why it has such a vengeful god etc etc. Or was this just a throw-away line?

Well, he actually says the story of creation was told to distract the Jews and make them more manageable. It's a comedy act, and he's looking at it from an atheist point of view.

The Jews were traveling through the Sinai peninsula at the time, and were supposedly going through it for 40 years. If that doesn't tell you the Old Testament was pretty loose with it's definition of time, I don't know what will.
