Eden originally posted this video months ago. This one embeds the identical source video - I was under the impression this was impossible unless the original had been killed.

Either way, I find this practice of raiding other people's discard piles kind of sleazy. If folks would bother to s
earch
before posting, this BS wouldn't happen. I know VS search is far from ideal, but that's no reason to just blow it off completely. Clearly, it will happen occasionally, but I've been seeing very large numbers of dupes (previously discarded or not) lately.

Not only is it possible, I think it's perfectly acceptable. The discard bin is full of gems and 'discarded before dead was invented' videos.

Would it be courteous to run it by the original poster before recycling their video? Sure, same as with many other actions on this site.

Take this post--
http://www.videosift.com/video/Zero-7-Destiny
It's one of my favourite music videos. The user is inactive, so I plan on queueing again it myself.

I've had this happen several times where I will post something and it doesn't make it out, then a couple months later someone else will post the same thing and it will make it out. I don't think there is anything wrong when this happen. Just be happy that someone else thought enough of the clip to also sift it and be happy it made it out. Sure I wish mine had made it, but for what-ever reason it didn't. That's life.

Discarded embeds aren't checked when a new video is submitted.

Is something is the in the deadpool, a repost is fair game- I don't think this is a case of discard pile raiding.

The library of published and dead videos is getting very large- so there's always going to be some overlap. I understand the frustration of seeing a video die and then the same video get out posted by someone else. There are a few factors to consider.

1. Video might be better titled, better tagged etc.
2. Video was submitted at a time of day where it received attention
3. Comments in the video thread drew people to the post
4. the new video was submitted 3-4 months after the original and VideoSift has grown since then.
5. The second submitter had more "Sift renown" so people were more likely to view and vote for the video. (contentious, I know)

I disagree on this point dag. I think if it's in the Dead Pool the embed should be fixed rather than someone reposting. Anything that has been discarded or killed, how-ever, is fair game.

first things first - nothing personal yaroslavvb - I picked on your post because it's just the most recent example I've seen. And obviously, you wouldn't have been able to promote the original yourself.

fissionchips - Not sure if it's what you meant, but I wasn't talking about videos that were discarded because they were deaded pre-3.0. Obviously, those should be fair game, because there is no way to bring them back otherwise.

But why would you resubmit that video? You'll probably be able to save it yourself by the end of next week. I'll even help you get there.

To an extent I agree with you about discarded posts belonging to inactive users, but Eden is an active user. She just posted a vid last week (unfortunately a dupe which wasn't discovered until after hers got published, but that was because it was a pain in the ass to find the original).

It's happened to me as well, and for the most part I would just be happy that a favorite vid of mine made it here. But it's been happening much more frequently lately, and it suggests that instead of going out and finding new and interesting vids, folks are just looking through discards to find good stuff.

Discarded embeds aren't checked when a new video is submitted.

I think Lucky disagrees. Can you confirm or deny this Lucky?

I just did a quick test with one of your discarded videos jonny. I took the code from the YouTube vid that was in your discard pile and went to sift it again. It passed the test and came back as a valid embed so it doesn't look like discarded video embeds are checked.

jonnysays...

Well, obviously it's currently possible, my point was that I was under the impression it is not supposed to be possible. I think when Lucky made that fix for Spoco, he may have inadvertently removed the check for discarded but not killed vids.

yeah, that's all i was waiting for as well.

jonny makes some good points. guess it'll be something we all keep an eye on, and try to discourage abuse of.

dag - I wasn't talking about dead videos, but functional discarded ones.

I totally agree with you about the reasons why a later post may make it out when the original didn't. And I don't really have too much problem with those (except possibly #5). But given the number of duplicates of both sifted and discarded vids I've seen lately, it seems like very few people are bothering to search before posting anymore. But hey - I suppose if everyone promoted a vid they had thought to submit instead, it would flood the recently promoted box.

pho3n1xsays...

i didn't check the deadpool when i saved this one, so this is probably my bad, but i didn't know it previously existed either.

i just thought it was a good video and deserved to be on the sift. *shrug*

jonnysays...

It is a good video worthy of the sift - and what you did was the cool thing to do, as opposed to trying to post it yourself. That was my point.

It wasn't in the deadpool, but had been discarded due to expiring out of the queue with 8 or 9 votes. Honestly, it wasn't this particular instance that got me, it just happened to be the one I pounced on after having seen more and more of it. I suppose I should have just created a standalone talk post.
