World's fastest bicycles set a land speed record of 81mph!

Sam Whittingham set the flat-ground bicycle speed record at 81mph in Battle Mountain, Nevada. He was riding the Varna Diablo composite-shell inclined bike built by Georgi Georgiev of Vancouver, British Columbia.

It's all in the gears and cutting wind resistance as much as possible (wind resistance is a huge factor). The guys piloting these are pedaling just as hard as they would if they were sprinting on a "normal" road bike and they're being given every possible mechanical advantage.

Back in the day, they used to tow them up to about 50 mph with a car, then let them go to do the rest on their own. The gear ratio was so high that they wouldn't have been able to get the bike moving at all without the initial tow. Dunno if that's still true.
