I've never ridden a recumbent bike, but I'd like to give it a shot some day.
LadyBugsays...who can pedal that fast?!?!
bigbikemansays...It's all in the gears and cutting wind resistance as much as possible (wind resistance is a huge factor). The guys piloting these are pedaling just as hard as they would if they were sprinting on a "normal" road bike and they're being given every possible mechanical advantage.
messengersays...Back in the day, they used to tow them up to about 50 mph with a car, then let them go to do the rest on their own. The gear ratio was so high that they wouldn't have been able to get the bike moving at all without the initial tow. Dunno if that's still true.
