Why is Sex a Sin?

tgeffeneysays...

This video appeals to those that have already made up their mind that the theistic viewpoing on sex is wrong. However, no where in this entire 7 minute video, is one fact used as a warrant to support his tenuous theory. Normally, I would find it a waste of time to respond to such biased and unresearched material, but my guess is that there are people out there niave enough to use this as a proof text for atheism.

What is interesting, is that both atheist and theists would agree that sex is fine, in fact it is encouraged and needed. Like most religions of the world, even the narrator himself condones sex but only wth certain recommended "safeguards" - just as the theist do. It just seems that the theistic view is a little too constrained for his slippery slope I guess.

So lets discuss his warrants.

1. That all religions say they are the 1 true religion: That is a required state of anyone who holds a mutually exclusive belief just like it is with atheism. Otherwise, if they didn't think this, then the members would convert to what they did think was the one true religion (or non religion)

2. You can't question your own religion: I don't doubt that this happens (I have had Jehovah's witnesses at my door even tell me they are not allowed to read material that is antagonistic of their fait). But in many churches including mine, it is considered a grave mistake to not question and seek out truth. Even the bible itself admonishes us to do just that. The smartest men who have ever lived on this earth have all logically questioned their faith and more often than not to a significant degree have chosen to believe in a god.

3. Churches tell you to pray for guidance if you have doubts: So what? In my church, not only would we pray with you on the matter, but we could provide philisophical, scientific, historical, etc. evidence the help you with your your doubt.

4. Hell is a deterant for being bad and keeps congregates in line: This is a misunderstanding of Christianity (other religions aside). We are ALL bad (i.e. sinners) and no one deserves Heaven. God then gives us a choice to fellowship with him, an eternal choice. Once in fellowship, your desires for sinning dissipate. Your other eternal choice is to be separated from God.

And if this were gambling, lets compare the bets. Atheisism offers you a wager that pays almost nothing, but could cost you everything. Jesus offers you more than the biggest lottery payout ever, and it costs you nothing.

Ah, you're one of those just-in-case Christians.
Inspiring.

I don't think most relgions consider sex to be a sin - just promiscuity. So a better question is - why is promsicuity a sin?

In the old days, a case of gonorrhea or syphilis was terminal. Likewise, keeping kosher prevented food poisoning.

This video is pretty poor, but upvote for the conversation.

Dag has a good point. I don't think most religions see sex as a sin, it's the perversion and/or abuse of the act that they are opposed too. Being a psych major I know one thing I've seen in my studies, pornography can really mess with people, it distorts their perceptions of reality and affects all of their relationships with people in a negative way. Just that alone, separate from theology, is enough to make me dislike the already preconcived and poorly supported notions of this film.

I've always liked Terry Pratchett's take on Pascal's wager. From Hogfather:

... the Quirmian philosopher Ventre said, "Possibly the gods exist and possibly they do not. So why not believe in them in any case? If it?s all true you'll go to a lovely place when you die, and if it isn't then you've lost nothing, right?" When he died he woke up in a circle of gods holding nasty-looking sticks and one of them said, "We're going to show you what we think of Mr. Clever Dick in these parts."

First off, downvote for culturally/religious insulting imagery in this video. I'm not such a delicate flower that I'll wield a discard at it, but it's EXTREMELY borderline; like dag, I won't push things a step further b/c of the discussion.

Moving on, other reason I would go "meh" or downvote: Catholic angle is that sex is NOT a sin (as tgef notes); video seems to agree at the end, but the title and most of the body of the vid itself is extremely misleading and childish. Sad.

I would disagree over tgef's other comment, though, ("we are all bad") - we are all good, which is why you should love your neighbour - but we do bad things (sins), which is why you want to fix those things, etc etc etc.

If you want an intelligent argument against belief, you have to attack free will, because that goes up against the "why do bad things happen" question, which is at the core of everything. It could actually make you think; this one just makes me roll my eyes b/c of the flaky warrants.

Some would argue that free will is an issue of semantics, rather others would argue that it's key to, everything.

Whatever - Scott Adams has the interesting writing for people to consider - check out his Sunday blog entries where he talks about 'serious' stuff - this video is just preachy.

And then read this just for kicks:

Good to balance out Scott's doom and gloom with Rocco's blog.
