Was the deputy actually ever shot?

He did not shoot the deputy, but did anyone shoot the deputy? Was he saying "Yeah, I shot the sheriff, but I let the deputy go unharmed," or is it as inferred in this video, "Okay, I did shoot the deputy, but I'm not responsible for the deputy being shot?"

Someone please clear up this age-old mystery for me.
