It looks to me like the kid didn't fit in and was looking for a place he could. The men showed him that he wasn't messed up enough to fit in with their group.

The lady was compassionate enough to go ahead and help the kid fit in. Despite fitting in his life is still hard with one concession, he can take comfort from the lady.

If you are mildly messed up is it better to be an outcast to all groups or is it better to be messed up more so you can fit in with one group?

I don't think Buddha would agree with the premise of this film.
