Total solar eclipse in Iwo Jima, Japan. 22 July 2009

NHK Japan captures the eclipse in stunning HD. Taken from the island of Iwo Jima, the video starts from Second Contact, through Totality to Third Contact. The video features zoomed-in portions of solar prominences ejecting from the surface of the sun.

I have been in one of these , whats funny is the way all the wild life gets totally confused, all the birds go mental and start flying around.

its not that dissimular to when a huge storm cloud suddenly covers the sun on a clear sunny day.

worth going to see

Very cool. If you pause the video at for instance 3:20 or 5:00, you can discern the Sun's magnetic field lines as vague filaments in the corona. This is because the charged plasma particles in the corona are unable to travel transverse to the field lines.

This is also the best live footage I've ever seen of a solar prominence.

I have seen a couple of these and an annular eclipse. The coolest thing from the annular was the shadows of everything which somehow become razor sharp and each contained a small image of the eclipsed sun.... absurdly cool.
