charliemsays...Voting is mandatory in australia, and we aussies get pissed off if it takes more than 10 minutes...but 10 hours ??!?!??
Fuck that.
honkeytonk73Took me 3 minutes to vote, but I live in a primarily white suburban town. On the other hand, if you live in a dense minority community. Expect to wait. It is a crappy tactic used to disenfranchise voters. Freedom.. liberty.. justice.. indeed. Think again.
littledragon_79I like that she equated the wait to $ (and physical ability too). As they say, time is money...and some people have neither
13150says...The point about individuals with disabilities was moot at the polling places in my small county. If a disabled voter came in, they were given preferential placement in the line precisely so that they would not have to wait.
The problem, of course, is a lack of voting machines, but you almost have to artificially limit the available number of machines to avoid the possibility of tampering with those machines.
TrancecoachI live in a small suburban town, but still I had to wait for about an hour to vote.. No one said a word when a woman with crutches cut the front of the line.
But I did turn down a woman who wanted to cut in front of me because she said she had to be at work, and didn't have the time to wait. I pointed to the line and said, yeah, well we all have to wait, so...
I think it's really unfortunate.
notarobotIn the Canadian election last month, voting took me 10 minutes. That included the time it took me to register, right there, at the polling station. We use paper ballots for the entire country, and results were in around midnight that night.
All this reporting, in the American election, about not just machines, but all the different types of machines used by each different state, having to register to vote weeks (months?) in advance, and wait times in excess of 45 minutes, I find strange.
I don't know why a country that seems so proud about its democratic essence, would go about so many steps to make voting seem more complicated and inaccessible.

imstellar28says...they need a lot more than a poll tax, they need a 100 question multiple choice quiz.
first question would be:
The system of government which best protects human rights is a:
A. Monarchy
B. Oligarchy
C. Democracy
D. Anarchy
E. Republic
Anyone who fills in A-D doesn't get to vote.

Fixed that for ya. There is a surprising number of people who would piss on the graves of our founding fathers and push us towards a Theocracy.
I only had to wait for the volunteers to find my name in the voter rolls. No line, even though the polling location was serving 2 voting districts. There was only one touch-screen machine, so I went with the available paper ballot option. I even got to load it into the Optical Scanner.
jwrayTime is money. Waiting lines = poll taxes.
