Clips of US version of "The Office" from season 1 concerning the relationship which Dwight Scrute and Jim Halpert have. Music is We're Going To Be Friends by The White Stripes.

I have to admit, not currently residing in the US, I didn't even know there was a US version, but really, what's The Office without Ricky Gervais? Why remake something that is already in English? Culturally it's not that different.

If you haven't already, watch the original.

I TOTALLY agree. The original is the funniest show I've seen in years. Mackenzie Crook is a scream...we've all worked with a Gareth Keenan. Look for the original on PBS or just BUY the show...it's worth it.

It's typical. We take something really brilliant and remake it. Why? Because we think we can do it better.

We're always wrong.

I don't doubt that it's good, but it just kind of irks me that they would so quickly remake a series that is already in English and in wide circulation, it kind detracts from the original, in the way any kind of knock-off does.

Why not just buy the rights and broadcast the original in the US?

Because the show is already a few years old, so not only are the pop culture references British, but they're out of date. Not to mention that there were less than 20 episodes total.

We're too spoon-fed in America. It would have been an excellent opportunity for US people to be exposed to British slang and humor, and their brains would have been stimulated. The same thing happened with "Coupling"...it was a good show, and the US remade it instead of just showing the original. And it bombed.

The reason for the 20 eps is because the show has an arc - you get to know these people in the Office, then see their troubles, then see how the troubles are resolved. It isn't open-ended with a "we'll go until we're cancelled" feel. You get to see the end...which is more enjoyable, I think. I would rather have quality than quantity.

Besides, we owe the Brits. We made them watch "Who's the Boss".....

I suppose it's all about the Hamiltons, or uhhm whoever is on the 20 pound note. I'm sure the original Office creators get nice royalties for each country's recreaton of the series. But seriously, to those who have wateched it - is the boss anywhere near as funny as Ricky Gervais?

daphnesays...

No funnier boss. He likes to keep it light, yeah? Funny. Makes it fun. Fun-time at the office. But it's not all fun, yeah? They do work. But it's fun, too. Work should be fun. His people love him. Love him.

(That's my horrible attempt at Davidisms

I love this show. However, I agree that it's not the same without the original boss from the UK version. He makes the show. However, the cast all around is much better in the US version in my opinion. Dwight is much funnier.

i've seen a few episodes but never got into the British office. one thing i did get into, however, is Ricky Gervais in HBO's Extras. anyone here watch that? that is quality humor!
