longdeOn the sift, these girls would be defended for standing up from free speech. Go figure.

SagemindFree speech nothing - They had no real purpose for the chant, other than to smear the word around. Tyra was the only black girl on the team so why would they be using that chant? (other than ignorance)
GenjiKilpatrickNigger is not a common word.. but a race?! and our culture?!?!?! o_O?!
wtF?!
Words are words. The emotions they evoke are only hurtful if you let them be. i.e. mentally removing that taboo
That said, it's good that she spoke up about it. And it's even better she'll be returning to the team.
longde"Words are words?" That would be your response to a high school girl that has been called a racial epithet to her face by a hostile teammate? You're almost worse than her other teammates who insisted their chant is no big deal.
Even adults are not immune from hurtful language, so I don't see the point in pretending everyone should be a stoic about words that carry so much history, context, and baggage.

Not by me.
gwiz665It's not about the word, it's the intention that matters. The word is a word, like titmouse, but in the context and in the way it was said (allegedly) the intention is hateful and that's why it would be hate speech in my eyes.

post discusses the chant http://www.wnymedia.net/2011/12/on-racism-at-my-alma-mater/

Not to a bullied or harassed schoolchild they're not. Words are weapons to kids that age.

Nice idea. Easier said than done, I think we could all agree? Especially for kids. I was told this so many times growing up but it's almost impossible to put into practice.
