TED: Margaret Heffernan: The dangers of "willful blindness"

Gayla Benefield was just doing her job -- until she uncovered an awful secret about her hometown that meant its mortality rate was 80 times higher than anywhere else in the U.S. But when she tried to tell people about it, she learned an even more shocking truth: People didn't want to know.

In a talk that's part history lesson, part call-to-action, Margaret Heffernan demonstrates the danger of "willful blindness" and praises ordinary people like Benefield who are willing to speak up. -- TED

same phenom with Cannabis... its just taking time and the internet now.

i mean, i can type it out: anticancer, neuroprotectants, alt. nontoxic pain relief, antiinflammatory... plant fibers themselves used for many products, cheaply and quickly grown unlike wood... hemp seeds contain all essential amino acids.

quite literally manna from creation. ignorance alone is enough to deny our birthrights!~ /soapbox

good post

That's (one reason) why I'm leaving the country (USA). No Hemp? No thanks. I've got a family I need to take care of, and Hemp is like... If money were to actually grow on trees, except you can skip the money part and go straight to all the truly good stuff you'd buy with it.

P.S. I've never smoked pot, nor I do even KNOW anyone who has. IMHO, that's crazy stupid.

No, the down-vote was for spouting off about terms like 'anticancer'. Especially with respect to something that's typically delivered into the body by burning it and inhaling its smoke. Additionally, you are *clearly* biased and that hurts your argument.

Perhaps it does have anti-cancer properties (and maybe via alternate delivery methods) but, coming on here claiming as though it's fact and it's the solution to all the world's problems seems rather silly to me. Also, posting a comment to me personally calling me "dickish" certainly doesn't help your argument.

Oh, and I'm not being "willfully blind". I just need a little more than anecdotal evidence.

how ironic too, in a post about willful ignorance. case in point!

I have a friend who is a psychiatric nurse who was taught on the first day on the job that she would see certain local illnesses that she wouldn't see from people who come from the neighboring province of BC as Cannabis is more a part of the lifestyle there.

I'd down vote too if I could. Not because of anything to do with cannabis, but because you are distorting the meaning of the concept that's being described in the video.

As the video explains, willful blindness is when people who know the same truth choose to ignore it. Not because they disagree with it, but because acting like it's not true is more beneficial than acting upon it being true.

It does not apply to people who rely on different information; and it does not apply to everyone who simply disagrees with you.

Rewatch the video, especially the part where she gives examples; and discusses her findings on people working at corporations who don't speak up about things they know.
