"This Oregon woman teaches her cats to swim and says they look like beautiful dancers." Seen on http://mfrost.typepad.com/cute_overload/2007/09/follow-up-swimm.html ...

Jesus, I can't believe so many people do not know cats can swim, sure they don't like it, but of course they have the ability, tigers actually like swimming and do it regularly. Almost all mammals can swim by instinct.

"...very proud of themselves."

Anthropomorphism. I don't see any of them jumping off the diving board or frolicking down the kitty slide. They are simply trying to get out of the water. No "teaching" required (other than maybe lessening their fear of the water, which still doesn't mean they like it).

@SG - Swampcats don't count.

My cat sits outside the bath when my son is taking one. Meowing his little head off. But when my son helps the cat into the bath it cant get out fast enough. Maybe the ones this lady has are smarter.

His meowing isn't "hey, I want in too!" it's "OMG! THE KID IS IN THE WATER! GET HIM OUT! GET HIM OUT! IT'S LIKE ACID! AAAHHHHH!"
