Damn those conspiracy theorist/liberal/terrorist/atheist* truth sayers.

Quantummushroom - insert your usual ad hominem argument here. Then we can return to the slaughter, murder, ethnic cleansing, resource stealing, illegal invasion of Iraq/Iran/Palestine* without further delay.

I'll tell you why I won't waste too much time with this.

The basis of the leftist argument, not just about Iraq, is that America is evil and imperialist, we've done nothing good for anyone and it's all about (insert commodity here).

No sane human can or should try to explain to socialists why America remains the light of the world, because reality can't compete with socialist-utopian fantasies, where all it takes to appease dictators is a little face time and a greeting card and denial that evil exists except when the USA "causes" it.

Iraq is but one theater in a global war that's going to last decades against patient, persistent fanatics. Democrats are attacking the surge not because they're trying to win the war with a new strategy, but to stop it altogether. Their motivation is a mystery, the results are not: premature withdrawal will breed chaos and the war will continue.

I am critical of many aspects of the war; surrender, however, is not an option.

I admit I'm slightly embarrassed for even responding to QM's predictably witless tripe, but it's also sort of fun in a way. The United States is quite clearly imperialist. It has over 700 military bases on foreign soil. It controls both sides of every ocean, etc. To state otherwise is, quite frankly, absurd, and a position one would have a very difficult time defending. The "evil" part is a straw man logical fallacy; no one who is serious is saying the US is "evil"; that's just a lot of hyperbole.

"America remains the light of the world"

man, that's rich.

Agree that the US is an empire, in the same vein as the British Empire. I think they were using loopy self-serving rhetoric like the above statement around 1900 too.

And yes, "evil" shouldn't even enter into the discussion - no point in imposing biblical relative terms on politics as usual.

"Iraq is but one theater in a global war that's going to last decades against patient, persistent fanatics."

You really are clueless.

You've really swallowed that whole "they hate us for our freedoms" bull, haven't you?

Please ask yourself how fighting fanatics in Iraq is making America safe.
