Why does a 1986 Saturday-morning-quality-animation movie have more plot and character development than 2 (probably 3) Michael Bay special effects extravaganzas?

(Unicron is possibly the baddest bad-ass villain ever created for kid-oriented animation. So bad-ass they needed to get Orson Mother-Fucking Welles to voice him.)
