San Diego mayor stands up for gay marriage

This is a heartfelt and moving last-minute change of heart as Mayor Jerry Sanders decides to support a resolution for gay marriage.

Is there any back story here as to why he is so broken up over this? I completely agree with his statements, but I don't understand why he seems as though he is about to cry at any moment.

Context anyone?

I don't know, but I suspect this guy might be expressing a huge change of heart. He seems like millions of Americans who were once certain that homosexuals were perverted fringe elements with no right to the "sacrament" of marriage. Now, the humanity of his constituents who love someone of their own sex has been brought home to him, and he has to align his actions with his conscience. Having to go back on a campaign promise as part of a change of conscience strikes me as pretty emotional. For all he knows, he is committing political suicide; I'm sure he's going to get some emotional and hate-filled responses--probably some of the respondents will question his own sexuality.

A similar change happened to my own father, who was an avowed "homo-hater" until a couple of his best friends got AIDS, came-out as gay, and yet continued to be the men he had always known.

I think this video shows the quiet heroism that is the force for social change.

I think you hit it, oxdottir -- it looks like he had a major epiphany and decided to go with what he truly felt rather than follow a political agenda that he didn't really believe in. You don't see that very often in politics, and I take my hat off to him.

His wife looks completely freaked!

A man is choked-up, therefore laws must be rewritten and society turned upside-down to accommodate his special feelings? Rubbish.

"Why is marriage considered to be any of the law's business in the first place? Because the state asserts an interest in the outcomes of certain unions, separate from and independent of the interests of the parties themselves.

Marriage imposes legal restrictions, taking away rights that individuals might otherwise have. Yet 'gay marriage' advocates depict marriage as an expansion of rights to which they are entitled."

Not that anyone deserves a disclaimer, but I have nothing against gay folks. Nor do I think there are spiritual penalties for being homosexual.

That said, I don't think legitimizing gay marriage is a good idea.

Gay marriage will probably become legalized in the US in the next 20 or 30 years. Like other failed social experiments, e.g. "wars" on poverty and drugs, its true costs to society will be hidden and its "benefits" trumped up.

I never thought I would want to stand up and applaud a Republican, but I now do. Whatever it was that made him change his mind is not relevant - he's in the right, and should be commended for his courage.

well done that man... in today's political climate it takes A LOT of guts to change your opinion and even more guts to stand up and publically admit to changing your beliefs.

All credit to this man

How can you logically vote against this post? Maybe not vote for something you disagree with, but to vote against implies to me it is a bad video or it has some glaring attribute which makes it unsift worthy. To me it just doesn't make sense.
