Wow. Preview of a HBO special of these fantastic comedians talking about comedy.

Sounds awesome.

Just "obtained" this special after watching this sift. It's excellent. Really good banter and interesting perspectives from them all about their art.

Thanks for the link, mentality. Just watched it.

Am I the only one to think Ricky Gervais was a bit of a fish out of water? The others are life long standup legends.

I don't know what it is about Gervais. I'm a huge fan, and I love the Office - I'm a big fan of British comedy - but sometimes he seems to be trying to hard. I also didn't really rate the way he sold out to Hollywood, with some fairly ordinary work. I got the impression Chris Rock doesn't rate him too highly.

Fair enough, and I'm also a huge Gervais fan. But is Seinfeld really known for his standup? If it weren't at the intro of every episode of his show, I personally would have never seen it.

He's totally known for his stand-up. He just played himself in Seinfeld, the role of a stand-up comic. And since the show he's continued doing that. I think he's got a return date lined in up in London during the summer.

Deanosays...

I watched the whole thing (though I'd love to see the whole unedited material) and I'd agree that Gervais as a stand-up doesn't really measure up to these guys. In the context of a chat about comedy it works but he's only there because he's high profile enough. But he's making Hollywood movies now and I wonder how many years of stand-up the other guys had in the bank when Gervais did his first gig. It's interesting that this clip starts with Gervais worrying about the need to have a stand-up identity, a voice and it's arguable that he has never had that.

Personally while I love Louis CK, Bill Burr remains my favourite comic. That guy is absolutely sensational.

And if you watch the whole thing that bit about the Otis Redding song had me in stitches.

Gervais is not that funny. Not close to being on their level as far as stand-up comedy. I do love The Office UK and Extras though. But the more I hear from Gervais the more I realize that the greatness of those shows probably came primarily from Merchant. Especially after the colossal failure that was The Invention of Lying.
