The Arizona Republic reports that Daniel Dockery's 9-month-old cat, Scruffy, was put down not because of cuts it got from a fence but because the 49-year-old Phoenix man couldn't immediately pay $400 for its care.

This happens thousands of times a day. Someone cannot afford medical treatment for their pet and are faced with surrendering the animal to face an uncertain future and / or the pet is killed.

Most emergency veterinarians won't move beyond a basic diagnosis without payment in-hand. The business of staying in business demands this attitude I guess.

Some shelters or animal hospitals have a fund to subsidize treatment for strays or clients who cannot afford to pay at all. It would be nice to see the reporter on this story mention this as a 'call to action' for people to donate to their local shelter. Instead the story is almost sensationalized and the focus is lost.

Welcome to the price of veterinary care in the 21st century. Getting cat's teeth cleaned cost us 800 buckersoos. 2 night emergency stay at vet due to a clogged urinary tract, $2500.

@Payback

I said hard, not how much money. Fact is it seems they slaughtered little buddy because they didnt want to put the effort into it. No pet is worth six grand ( to me), if they are going to kill'em, might as well of just stuck it in the corner in a big box with holes for a couples days too see how he did after being bandaged, or whatever 400 dollars gets you. The lack of peoples willingness to give a shit is irking me lately. Someone put gum on the apartment door earlier, wtf ? ?
