"One Minute Racist" -- short and sweet little movie

An extremely funny, short, and sad meditation on racism (3:30)

Caveh Zahedi - "One Minute Racist" (2008)

Caveh Zahedi, animated in clay, speaking about a college friend named Arnold, a study hall security guard, and the nature of racism. A short film created by Ian Danskin, Alan Peterson, and Caveh Zahedi.

"Caveh Zahedi tells a story about a moment's lapse into racism. The film attempts to shed light on the mental process by which racism becomes internalized."

This certainly doesn't apply to me. That effect of planting a seed and then someone confirms the doubt and suddenly i'm racist. I think this is more a video about how idiots listen to something idiotic and then believe the idiocy based on some other idiot being an idiot.

I got told about a guy for about 6 months at school, "have you met this guy? he's a real bible basher, he sucks the bible's cock all day" and various other typical schoolyard bullshit. Basically, virtually the entire school knew the guy and whenever he was mentioned or whatever, people would go "oh man he's so into the bible, what a boring bible bashing loser." Sounds like the worst thing you could be at my high school was a christian, but actually it was worse to be gay. A gay christian would have no chance.

So anyway i finally met the guy and the first thing we did was argue and yes it was about the bible and christianity in general, yet i didn't join in the ignorance because i really appreciate the way he argued about it with me.. never giving in to flat out rudenes, but a nice clean argument between 2 people who disagreed but wanted to understand why the other thought the way they did and see if they could change their point of view. Anyway i eventually became best friends with him and nope this didn't confirm the seed that had been planted. Same goes for gay people too. When a guy came out at my high school i was the only one that continued to be friends with him. Maybe i'm special.

Maybe the reason this didn't happen to me is because i've never had a racist mindset? Maybe people who could be susceptible to it might agree. Nice story anyway. Almost tempted to delete that and say "it's a cool story, bro." I think i won in the end cos he's not a christian anymore. I never managed to argue the gay guy into being straight though. Stubborn bastard.

Thinking Asians are uptight really isn't racism. Stereotypes can be cultural, not racial. It would only be racism if you thought that Asians were uptight because of something inherent to their genetic makeup. If you see someone who probably belongs to a particular culture, and you dislike aspects of that culture, I don't see why it is outlandish to assume that you probably dislike aspects of their personality.

I think hipsters are superficial no-knowledge zeros, so chances are if you are coming out of a coffee shop wearing a plaid t-shirt and skinny jeans, I dislike you. Doesn't mean I think you have a hipster gene; but still, I probably don't like you.

imstellar28,

Your incorrect on your idea of steroetypes being only cultural. Yes, if one says "those black people are stupid as boards and live in the ghetto cus their not smart to get out." is racists. Saying "those black people stay in that neighborhood cus they aren't bashed as they would be in the white neighborhood" is STILL, a recists comment.

For a while after September 11, 2001 (aka 9/11), people associated arabs with terrorists. In fact, those who wore a turbin were considered terrorists as well. In fact, anyone that wasn't from Europe (germanic looking), Asia (japanesse/chinesse looking) or black (from africa) were considered terrorists. Racisms often ignores facts. Part of the Middle East, is in Europe, Africa and Asia. But dont tell that to racists at the time, as would view you as a terrorist sympathizer, and hence, un-American. After 9/11, there was (and still is) a movement that says unless your pro-American (read: conservative republican), your un-Americans (like liberals, moderates and liberals).

An so, there were numerous attacks on Arab-Americans who were born in the USA, went to public schools in the USA, and love their home country of America. Racists are not often the educated sort who think on their victims. If they did, they wouldn't be racists, they'd be socialpaths, who are even worst.

While we all discriminated on things, the concept of 'discrimination' as it applies to race, takes on a different meaning. To be an American, is to accept, that those who's skin, height, weight, hair, eyes, and even gender are different from yours, they are the same as you. Those who's religion, creed, and education are different from yours, is the same as you. Its the 'Melting Pot' effect that makes Americans a very diverise lot.

Its not to say we have removed racisms. American still has it in boat loads. The things that seem to stem the tide of racism, is education. The more educated a person is, the more often they are around those who's difference also make them the same.

Generally best to ignore the swine when he's rutting.

Jealousy and small-dick syndrome can make little piggies say the darnedest things.

Whats wrong with prejudice? Prejudice works both ways you know - its not always negative. For example, if you hear someone is an atheist and assume they are a free-thinker. Or if you hear someone is a libertarian and you assume they are very intelligent . Theres just not enough time in the world to get to know every person you meet so most information you gather must be based on assumptions. To act like you have no prejudice is just dishonest.

Prejudice is only a problem when it prevents you from making a rational judgment; i.e. you think Asians are uptight and this prevents you from ever being friends with an Asian - even one who isn't uptight.

I don't like americans, hippies, hipsters, liberals, people with obama 08 bumper stickers, christians, politicians, police officers, military personnel, tax collectors, blacks, jews, or gays

Just kidding on the last three . Point is, disliking whole groups of people isn't a problem unless its irrational. I would be friends with someone belonging to any of those groups. Of course, if you are a hippie obama t-shirt wearing christian tax collector you better have some pretty funny jokes.

You're correct, that's prejudice. Which really isn't any better.
