One Man, One Cow, One Planet

Neat little trailer for a movie about some of the problems that Indian farmers are having with GM seeds. Recently 17,000 Indian cotton farmers killed themselves because they could no longer afford the seed. Also recently, it was found that the GM seed was more susceptible to things that ruined cotton crops, like disease and insects.

It's nice to see that somebody out there is trying to do the right thing instead of just making more money.

there is some interesting and scary stuff on the website this links to:
e.g. raids on farmers for selling raw milk:

urviving-a-raid-on-your-farm-or-food-club/P1
America: You can do what you want here, but if you sell raw milk we will raid your property and hold your family at gun point while we look around.

Thanks for the link.

I don't want to sound conspiratorial, but I really have to wonder sometimes what the hell is going on.

I used to work on a dairy farm, which is a polite way of saying a place where five thousand Holstein cows are crammed together in a five-acre lot, wallowing in their own shit day and night. They're pumped full of hormones (for production) and antibiotics (because they lay around in shit all day).

The "Got Milk?" people are...a pretty big thing. Lots of pull on the state and federal level.

And they don't like competition.

(side note: of course, nine out of ten dairy farmers are staunch Republicans, and yet, ten out of ten of those farmers receive hundreds of thousands of dollars per year in government subsidies thanks to the "Got Milk?" lobby)

You ever get a chance to taste full cream milk from a cow vs the standard stuff in the store, I think most people would be surprised how far apart they are...

A local dairy produces fresh, un-homogenised milk (so the cream can separate) and the difference in taste between that and any of the major brands (which homogenise, use bulking agents, produce 20 different types of 'milk' etc) is surprising.

ps. Not far from the end of the vid there is a real "Right Stuff" moment when you see the old Kiwi and a number of older Indian chaps walking down the road together... ; )
